[German]With the security updates of July 9, 2024, Microsoft has patched some bugs and vulnerabilities in the relevant Windows versions. However, I have received reports from readers that the July 2024 updates are causing problems with the print service. Users report that the LPD service crashes after the first printout. Printing is then no longer possible – another problem with the July 2024 patchday.

Windows 10 Update KB5040427
Cumulative Update KB5040427 is available for Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2. For Windows 10 21H2, only the Enterprise LTSC and IoT variant will receive the update (for the last time). The update only contains security fixes, but no new operating system functions. I had given some hints about the cumulative update in the blog post Patchday: Windows 10/Server Updates (July 9, 2024).
Crash of the LPD service
German blog reader Jan wrote this comment on the blog post Microsoft Security Update Summary (9. Juli 2024) on July 11, 2024 and describes that in his environment the LPD service "unexpectedly" crashes after installing the KB5040427 update under Windows 10 after just one press. After uninstalling the update, the service works again.
On July 11, 2024, German reader C.M also reported in this comment on the blog post Windows Juli 2024-Updates machen Remote Verbindungen kaputt and states that in his environment the LPD Deamon crashes after one minute after installing the update on the print servers. Blog reader squat0001 also confirms this problem in the reply here.
Windows Server also affected
In his comment above, Jan referred to the post LPD Service stops after CVE-2024-38027 from July 11, 2024 in the Microsoft Answers forum. While only Windows 10 users have reported being affected here in the blog, the thread starter in the Microsoft Answers forum states that he has observed these crashes on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2022. In the thread, a number of users confirm these crashes and one user posted the following error excerpt:
Faulting application name: svchost.exe_LPDSVC, version: 10.0.17763.3346, time stamp: 0xb6a0daab
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.17763.5933, time stamp: 0x28f68183
Exception code: 0xc0000374
Fault offset: 0x00000000000fb199
Faulting process id: 0x8dc
Faulting application start time: 0x01dad340b508fe35
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
If I browse through the various sources, the July 2024 updates KB5040427 (Windows 10), KB5040430 (Windows Server 2019) and possibly the updates for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2016 as well as Windows Server 2022 seem to cause this effect.

Workarounds for the problem
With this LPD service crash, two workarounds have emerged to solve the problem. In the Microsoft Answers forum, a user writes that he has replaced the LPDsvc.dll file in C:/Windows/System32 with an older version. After that, the LPD service no longer crashes.
The second workaround was posted here by a German blog reader: One revised the LPD service as a workaround and under Restore set all 3 parameters Service error to "Restart service" and Restart service after "1" minute. This helps for the time being if the print volume is not too high.

The file is called LPDSVC.DLL. Replacing it with an older version does indeed work.
