Windows Server: Confirmed that July 2024 updates will break Remote Desktop

Windows[German]With the security updates that Microsoft rolled out for Windows on July 9, 2024, there are problems with remote connections. I have received some reports that the Remote Desktop Gateway service is broken and regularly crashes under some Windows versions (Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022). Now Microsoft has officially confirmed these problems with remote connections.

Remote Desktop Gateway service broken

The July 9, 2024 security updates are definitely causing collateral damage to the Remote Desktop Gateway service. Blog reader Christian wrote in this German comment that he had to uninstall the cumulative update KB5040442 on a 2022 server. Descriptions such as Remote Desktop Gateway frequent disconnects after KB5040430 can also be found on the Internet in the Microsoft Answers forum.

I had compiled various user reports and a description of the situation in the blog post Windows Juli 2024-UWindows July 2024 updates break remote connectionspdates machen Remote-Verbindungen kaputt. And I described a way to work around the problem in the post Workaround for broken Windows Remote Desktop Gateway service after July 2024 updates.

Microsoft confirms the problems

In the Microsoft Answers forum post Remote Desktop Gateway frequent disconnects after KB5040430 there is now a note that Microsoft has confirmed the problem for various updates.

The colleagues from Bleeping Computer have also listed the following two updates as affected (in the KB articles it is listed as a problem).

In the Known Issues sections of these updates, Microsoft has now posted information about the remote desktop problem. It states that the relevant updates for Windows Server can affect Remote Desktop connectivity in an organization. This only occurs if the legacy protocol (Remote Procedure Call over HTTP) is used in Remote Desktop Gateway. This can lead to Remote Desktop connections being interrupted.

Microsoft writes that the problem can occur intermittently, e.g. every 30 minutes. During this interval, logon sessions are lost and users must reconnect to the server. IT administrators can track this as a termination of the TSGateway service, which stops responding with the exception code 0xc0000005.

Workarounds from Microsoft

Microsoft describes two workarounds in its support articles to prevent the crashes and problems – but these are exactly the workarounds I mentioned in the post Workaround für kaputten Windows Remote Desktop Gateway-Dienst nach Juli 2024-Updates:

  • Option 1: Prohibit connections via the pipe and the port \pipe\RpcProxy\3388 through the RD Gateway. This procedure requires the use of connection applications, such as firewall software.
  • Option 2: Remove the key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\RDGClientTransport for the RDGClientTransport in the registry of client devices by setting its DWORD value to 0x0.

Details of the workarounds can be found in the support articles linked above for the relevant July 2024 updates. Microsoft is working on a solution to the problem and intends to make this available with one of the next updates.
