Windows 11 (22H2 – 23H2): Update KB5041585 causes performance problems

Windows[German]Microsoft has fixed some security issues with the August 2024 update KB5041585 for Windows 11 (version 22H2 – 23H2). Under Windows 11, however, systems can suddenly become very slow and CPU utilization can increase. Microsoft has now been informed about the problem. The remedy is to uninstall the update or deactivate the flow control (Control Flow Guard, CFG) in Defender.

Windows 11 Update KB5041585

Cumulative update KB55041585 has been available for Windows 11 22H2 – 23H2 since August 13, 2024 and includes quality improvements and security patches. This fixes a BitLocker problem (see Windows Bitlocker recovery key query bug fixed by August 2024 updates). However, the update has also caused boot problems on dual-boot systems with Linux (see Windows August 2024 update 'paralyzes' Linux boot). Information on the update can be found in the linked support article and in the blog post Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (August 13, 2024).

Performance problems with KB5041585

Blog reader Sascha contacted me by e-mail because he noticed problems with the cumulative update KB5041585 (thanks for that). In the company where Sascha works, there are around 1,000 Dell notebooks that are managed using Microsoft Intune. After installing the August 2024 update KB5041585, users noticed that there are problems with CPU utilization and performance. Every Windows Notebook 11 is very slow.

Sascha also pointed me to this post on Windows Latest, which also mentions performance issues related to this update. On reddit.com there is this post where a user complains about the same performance issues.

I don't know what in the world happened with this update, but it's completely screwed up my laptop. Slow, laggy, extremely delayed response time, Minecraft realms won't even show and no sound at all on the app, I uninstalled the updates, had to restart my laptop probably ten dang times, just to have it REINSTALL the friggin updates I'd just UNINSTALLED, WITHOUT ME telling it to!

Other users confirm this observation in the reddit.com thread. On YouTube there is the article Is Your Windows 11 Freezing & Lagging? Latest Update KB5041585 Might Be the Problem!, which Sascha also pointed out.

A workaround in Defender

Most users will have to uninstall the August 2024 update KB5041585 to be able to use the notebook with Windows 11 again. The cause of the performance loss or the increasing CPU load is the Exploit Protection with Windows Defender. Therefore, you can also deactivate the Control Flow Guard (CFG) in the Defender settings under Exploit Protection. The usual performance should then be available again. According to my information, Microsoft is aware of the problem and is looking for a workaround and the cause. Maybe it will help someone.
