Windows 11 24H2: Problems with USB scanners that use eSCL

Windows[German]In addition to the problems with Ubisoft games under Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has also admitted to difficulties with USB scanners. USB scanners are simply not found if they use the eSCL scan protocol. A scanner problem has already been reported by a reader, but I have not yet been able to identify it. Here are the details on this issue.

A reader reports on scanner problems

Windows 11 24H2 was made available to interested users as a feature update on October 1, 2024 (see Windows 11 24H released (Oktober 1, 2024)). However, this release is currently annoying users with numerous bugs, some of which were already known at the time of release. The links at the end of the post refer to articles here in the blog that describe the individual bugs.

A few days ago, German blog reader MOM20xx posted a comment "Great this Windows 11 24H2" and asked "What has Microsoft changed again with the scanners?" His Canon i-SENSYS MF633Cdw Laser worked perfectly with printing and scanning with Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2. With Windows 11 24H2 it only works with printing. The scanner driver is installed, but when I want to scan to the computer or trigger a scan from the computer to the scanner, a great error message appears.

MOM20xx then referred to the forum post Canon MF655cdw Scan Utility not working on Win11 24H2 in the US Canon forum, where the problem is also described. After updating to Windows 11 version 24H2, the user's Scan Utility no longer works. The following error dialog is shown.

The affected US user states that he has reinstalled the drivers and deactivated the firewall and virus protection without success. The printer is connected via LAN. It is interesting that the reader states that the Microsoft Scan app from the store works perfectly, but the Scan Utility from Canon does not. In the thread there is a note that completely uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software helped.

MOM20xx then referred to a second thread iimageCLASS MF656Cdw will not scan via a wireless connection in the forum. The thread contains many suggestions on how to get the scanner up and running. The promised approach of "connect the device via USB and everything will work under Windows, it will do it itself" somehow doesn't work.

There are similar problems with other manufacturers, writes MOM20xx and mentions that he also found something about scanner problems on Reddit. He asked whether anyone among the readership had had similar experiences and suggested discussing this in the blog.

USB scanners with eSCL support go on strike

Microsoft has acknowledged a problem with scanners that support the eSCL scan protocol as of November 22, 2024. The Windows 11 24H2 Health Status page contains the support article UUSB devices that support eSCL scan protocol may not be discoverable.

After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, problems may occur when recognizing devices connected via USB that support the eSCL (eScanner Communication Language) scan protocol. It may happen that the peripheral device connected via USB is not recognized in Windows and the device recognition cannot be completed. This problem primarily affects multifunction devices connected via USB or standalone scanners that support the scan function and the eSCL protocol.

What Microsoft says about the eSCL problem

In the support article USB devices that support eSCL scan protocol may not be discoverable, Microsoft writes that eSCL is a driverless scan protocol that was developed for networked scanners. It enables driverless scanning via a network (Ethernet, Wi-Fi) and USB connections.

The above-mentioned problem in Windows 11 24H2 is caused by the device not switching from eSCL mode to USB mode. The scanner drivers can only be adapted in USB mode.

To avoid the hassle for Windows 11 users with scanners, Microsoft has set a compatibility lock for systems where devices that support the eSCL scanning protocol are connected via USB. The installation of Windows 11 24H2 via Windows Update will not be offered on these devices. IT administrators using Windows Update for Business reports can check this issue with the protection ID 54762729.

Microsoft advises against manually updating to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 installation wizard or the media creation tool until this issue is resolved. It should also be noted that this protection measure applies not only to scanners, but also to other devices such as printers, fax machines, modems and network devices that are connected via an eSCL protocol.

What is unclear to me: In the text above, I mentioned multifunction devices connected via WLAN where scanning is not possible. Are these problems also related to the eSCL protocol? In this case, Microsoft's explanation above that the devices do not switch from eSCL mode to USB mode would not really fit. However, Microsoft is working on a solution and will provide more information as it becomes available. We may not see you until next year.
