Operating system/Windows share (End of December 2024)

Windows[German]It's the beginning of 2025 and Statcounter's figures for operating system distribution on the desktop are available for the end of December 2024. What about Microsoft Windows share on the desktop? Windows 10 will no longer be supported after October 2025. With this in mind, how is Windows 11 share on the desktop?

Operating system share across all platforms

The website statcounter.com has published the market shares of various operating systems (desktop, mobile devices) here. Android had 47.21% at the end of December 2024 (45.16% at the beginning of October), which is an increase. Windows has fallen from 26.67% (beginning of October) to 25.73% market share. Apple has also fallen in user favor with iOS at 17.4% (previously 18.12%), while macOS has also fallen from 5.61% to 4.96%. Linux has a meagre 1.46% (previously 1.64%) market share.

People seem to be going back from Windows 11 to Windows 10 – whether the problems with Windows 11 24H2 have anything to do with this is unclear. Windows 7 is still running on 2.41% of systems, while Windows 8.1 is barely a factor at 0.18%.

It is amazing to me how difficult it is for Windows 11 to gain significant market share. Windows 10 is probably still the workhorse on desktop systems and is likely to remain so in the coming months.

Browser: Chrome kills everything

It was interesting for me to take a look at the browser share on this Statcounter page. The Google Chrome browser is the undisputed leader with a market share of 68.3%. Apple's Safari browser has a 17.12% share, while Microsoft's Edge has a 4.93% share. Firefox only has a 2.47 % share.
