Windows Server 2019-2025: March 2025 update triggers BSOD at Veeam

Windows[German]Information for administrators of Windows Server 2019, 2022, 23H2 and 2025 who use Veeam Backup & Replication. Their Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is causing problems in conjunction with the March 2025 cumulative updates. A Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with the code 0x00000149 may occur, or there is a high memory consumption on ReFS disks.

Blog reader Oliver informed me about the issue by email (thanks for that). Veeam already published a support article ReFS Known Issues, Considerations, and Limitations on the topic in 2018, as the problem only affects disks with a ReFS file system.

In an update dated March 31, 2025, the support article states that the March 2025 cumulative updates for Windows Server 2025, 23H2, 2022 and 2019 have known issues. These updates can lead to a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a bug check code of 0x00000149. The following updates are affected:

  • KB5053598 (Windows Server 2025)
  • KB5053599 (Windows Server 23H2)
  • KB5053603 (Windows Server 2022)
  • KB5053596 (Windows Server 2019)

The effects vary depending on the update and Windows Server version used with ReFS as the file system. In addition to the BSOD mentioned above, a memory leak (as described below) can also occur.

Microsoft has announced that it is working on corrections for this problem. The fix is expected to be released with the April 2025 updates for the server versions concerned. More details may be found within the support article.
