[German]Update KB5002700 for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installation) released on April 8, 2025, crashes in Excel, Outlook and Word 2016. On April 10, 2025 Microsoft has released an out-of-band update KB5002623 to fix that crashed. On April 15, 2025, Microsoft also made the KB5002623 update for Office 2016 available in the WSUS.

Review of the crashes in Office 2016
Microsoft released update KB5002700 update for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI version) on April 8, 2025. This update closes a series of vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-29791, CVE-2025-29792, CVE-2025-29816, CVE-2025-27745, CVE-2025-27748, CVE-2025-27749 und CVE-2025-27752).
The installation of this security update resulted in crashes of Office 2016 applications like Excel, Outlook and Word. I reported on the problems with Outlook in the blog post Outlook 2016: Calendar access blocked after April 2025 update KB5002700 and mentioned disabling weather integration as a workaround.
In the blog post Word/Excel 2016 crashing after April 2025 update KB5002700 crashes in Word 2016 and Excel 2016 were mentioned. There was a suspicion that a PDF plugin or communication with online services could be the cause.
Update KB5002623 available in WSUS
On April 10, 2025, update KB5002623 for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) was released to fix these crash issues (see OOffice 2016 update KB5002623 fixes crashes in Excel, Outlook, Word (April 10, 2025)). However, this update was only available via direct download links from the support article KB5002623. Not very manageable for larger Office 2016 MSI installations.
In this German comment, Oliver had asked whether the update would be made available for the WSUS in the near future. Microsoft had not announced anything about this. I therefore assumed that Microsoft would follow the usual line and only make the fixes from KB5002623 for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) available on Patchday in May 2025 via Windows Update and thus also for the WSUS.

A download via the Microsoft Update Catalog for import into the WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) was also not available. However, Microsoft has now responded, as I have seen in various comments from readers here on the blog. Update KB5002623 for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) should be available via WSUS since April 15, 2025.
Questions about that update
Readers have asked whether it is necessary to install both Office 2016 updates on the clients – especially as some administrators had uninstalled the faulty update KB5002700 for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI version) from April 8, 2025. As far as I know, both updates (KB5002700, KB5002623) need to be installed. Feedback from my German blog readers says that the order to install both updates doesn't matter.

"whether it is necessary to install both Office 2016 updates"
KB5002623 breake office itself, without 2700. There is no check if 2700 is installed or not. After 2623 office crashes similar to 2700.
So yes, you need both.
