Windows 11 24H2: Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) App Attach fails

Windows[German]Brief information for administrators in the blog readership who use Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and are migrating clients to Windows 11. Under Windows 11 24H2 there is a problem that the App Attach feature of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) does not work. Microsoft has developed a fix that is being delivered in stages.

Microsoft has posted a new article AVD applications using App attach feature might fail to start in the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health dashboard in the Known Issues on July 1, 2025. After upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2, Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) users may experience issues with applications using the App Attach feature.

App Attach allows applications from an application package to be dynamically attached to a user session in Azure Virtual Desktop. Applications are not installed locally on session hosts or directly on the virtual machine.

When trying to start App Attach applications, an error message such as Element not found may appear. This issue only occurs with Windows 11 24H2 versions running in Azure Virtual Desktop. It is only expected to affect systems when App Attach applications are packaged in CIMFS (Composite Image File System) format. CIMFS is a file system used in Azure Virtual Desktop for managing application images.

Microsoft has developed a solution that is being phased in and is fully enabled on devices with KB5060829 (released June 26, 2025) and subsequent updates installed. Microsoft recommends installing the latest update for the systems as it contains important improvements and fixes, including this issue.

If update KB5060829 or a subsequent update is not yet installed and this occurs, users can use a VHDX (Virtual Hard Disk v2) image instead of a CIMFS image to package files.
