[German]The US branch of Belkin (provider of SmartHome accessories), has just announced that it will discontinue support for many of its Wemo SmartHome components as of January 31, 2026. From this date, various intelligent Wemo SmartHome components that rely on the cloud will no longer be controllable via the Wemo app.
Belkin Wemo SmartHome accessories
I had a short look, Wemo SmartHome devices are still listed on Belkin's US site, so it means they are still on sale.
These are control units for lights or devices. According to Belin, Wemo SmartHome accessories have been available since 2011. Wemo cameras has been shut down in 2020 (see Belkin shuts down Wemo NetCam Server at May 29, 202).
Belkin Wemo SmartHome reaches end of support
In a message Wemo Support Ending – What You Need to Know dated July 10, 2025, Belkin USA now informs its customers that support for older Wemo products will soon end.
Over the past ten years since Belkin launched Wemo in 2011, the company has been committed to providing consumers with innovative, easy-to-use accessories for a seamless smart home experience. However, as technology continues to evolve, resources need to be focused on other areas of Belkin's business.
After careful consideration, Belkin management has made the difficult decision to discontinue technical support for legacy Wemo products effective January 31, 2026.
After this date, several Wemo products will no longer be controllable via the Wemo app. All features that rely on cloud connectivity (Google Home, Alexa, Wemo app), including remote access and voice assistant integration, will no longer work after this date.
Devices configured with Apple HomeKit prior to this date will continue to work via local HomeKit control without the need for Wemo cloud services or app.
Belkin writes in an FAQ that the shutdown will not affect the functionality of Wemo's Thread-based products – model numbers WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100, WDC010. These will continue to work via HomeKit as before.
Owners of Wemo products that are still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 may be eligible for a partial refund. However, Belkin states that refund requests will not be processed before this date.
I had a look, this website lists affected and unaffected devices. This ranges from devices that were sold in August 2015 to models that were on the market until November 2023. However, the "smart plug" sockets are unlikely to have been used in Europe. However, the episode shows that cloud dependencies come at a price. If the manufacturer switches off, the customer is left with non-functional components.
