Windows bugs: Update and shutdown; Lock screen; Start menu and search

Windows[German]I'm going to compile a list of bugs and inconsistencies related to Windows 10/11 that I've recently come across in a single post. The "Update and shut down" function in the Start menu seems to be broken in Windows 11, but Microsoft is working on it. The lock screen may behave strangely in Windows 11, and an administrator reports problems with the Start menu and search in RDS on Windows Server 2022.

Windows 11: 'Update and shut down' broken?

I admit, I'm a little "lost." With Windows 7, it was kind of standard practice for me to select the 'Update and shut down' option in the Start menu when updates were pending. Then I could turn off the monitor and know that the PC would also be off after the update installation. The next day, I would turn it on, let the update installation finish, log in, and continue working.

Under Windows 10, it has happened to me a few times that I came into the office and the computer, which I actually wanted to shut down with "Install update and shut down," was running again. I always thought that I had made a quick mistake and clicked on the wrong command.

Zack Bowden on Windows update and shutdown

The other day, I came across the above tweet from Zack Bowden, and it clicked. In this article, he describes exactly the effect I have experienced with Windows 10, namely that "Update and shut down" does not work in Windows 11.

Bowden states that for two years, users have been reporting that the Update and Shut Down option in the Start menu or Windows Update never works in Windows 11 and shuts down the computer. Instead, the update is installed and the PC restarts, returning the device to the lock screen or desktop.

Bowden writes that Microsoft has confirmed that it is testing a fix in the latest Windows 11 preview versions that should resolve this long-standing bug in Windows Update. The Update and Shut Down option should actually shut down the computer after the update is installed. I don't know at this time whether this has already been rolled out via Windows Update and whether readers have had similar experiences.

Windows 11 lock screen problem?

Reader Florian contacted me by email the other day and wrote: "I'd be interested to know if readers are already aware of this problem." In Windows 11 (23H2, 24H2, 25H2), he observed and reproduced the following behavior.

  • If you select a window that is not on the main screen by hovering over the taskbar with the mouse so that the preview image is displayed,
  • and then lock the computer using the Windows + L key combination, this window remains visible in the locked state.

However, according to the reader, interaction with the window is then no longer possible. Can anyone confirm this? In my VM, the host always interferes when I test it.

Are there search and start menu problems with RDS?

It has been several days since I came across the issue that the Windows Start menu and search are not working for some users on RDS at administrator.de (see Windows Startmenü und Suche funktioniert bei einigen Nutzern auf RDS nicht). One affected user describes how the most recently added users on a Windows Server 2022 at RDS are experiencing problems. The Start menu and search function do not work for the latest users connecting to the RDS server. As far as I can tell, the thread has petered out without a solution or explanation. Is anyone familiar with this problem and is there a solution?
