Samsung's April 2026 Android update breaks Microsoft 365 apps / Authenticator

[German]Samsung has apparently been rolling out the April 2026 Android security update for several days now. A reader pointed out to me that there are serious issues with Microsoft 365 apps on Android once the update is installed. Microsoft Teams and the Authenticator no longer work. Other Microsoft 365 apps are reportedly affected as well. Disabling the Private DNS option is said to help.

Samsung Android April 2026 Update

Since April 8, 2026, there have been reports in the media that Samsung is distributing the April 2026 Android security update for its Android smartphones (see here for example). The Android April 2026 security update closes 47 vulnerabilities on Galaxy smartphones. A total of 14 vulnerabilities are critical, four others are classified as high, and affect devices with Samsung Exynos CPUs.

A Reader's Tip About Issues with MS365 Apps

German blog reader Oliver P. contacted me via email this morning (thanks for that) and wrote in an email with the subject line "Samsung Galaxy April Patch Crashes M365 Apps" that the topic might be worth covering on the blog. Since last Friday (April 17, 2026), he has been annoyed by an issue that occurs on Samsung Galaxy smartphones after installing the Samsung April 2026 security update.

Bug description on the Samsung forum

Oliver sent me the link to the thread Issues with Microsoft apps after April 2026 security update on the Samsung forum. Someone there writes:

I have an s25 ultra and after the April 2026 security patch MS Teams and MS authenticator will work fine and then all the sudden they stop. I can open teams but everyone's status goes away and if I IM someone it just sits there sending. Also when that happens I stop getting notifications from MS authenticator. Sometimes I can't even get into the authenticator app. So far the only way I have found to temporarily fix it is to reboot the phone. That is getting annoying.

The thread above is already seven pages long, so this issue is affecting a lot of users of Samsung Android devices. On page 7, someone writes that they were able to uninstall Google Play Services. After restarting the Samsung Galaxy S25, the Microsoft apps reportedly worked flawlessly. They then updated Google Play Services, restarted the smartphone again, and the apps continued to work. Others write that the error keeps coming back.

Post on the Microsoft Forum

There is also a post on the Microsoft Q&A forum titled My Microsoft Apps have stopped working on my Samsung Ultra S25 dated April 17, 2026. A user reports that the Microsoft apps on his Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra have stopped working "since this week."

  • The user first noticed the issue with Outlook emails, which stopped updating and then simply disappeared. All that was displayed was a black screen; no messages appeared.
  • He was also unable to start a Teams meeting using his Microsoft Teams app on Wednesday (April 15, 2026). Only the spinning icon for establishing a connection appeared, so I had to switch to my laptop.
Verbindungsherstellung, sodass ich auf meinen Laptop umsteigen musste.

Everything works perfectly on his PC and laptop, but the Microsoft apps no longer work on his smartphone. The user writes that he isn't aware of any updates on his phone. However, he notes that many other people have been experiencing this issue since a week.

A possible workaround

Blog reader Oliver wrote: "Especially if you rely on Microsoft Authenticator, this quickly becomes a real headache." He found the following workaround for himself on his Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Go to the Connections section on the Settings page. Then, under Additional connection settings, set the Private DNS option to OFF. After restarting his smartphone, everything worked again for him.
