August 2026 Patch Day Recap (Office, Windows)

Update[German]On August 11, 2026, Microsoft released a batch of security updates for various Microsoft products (Office, Windows, etc.). It appears that no major disasters occurred after the security updates were installed. However, I've received reports from readers here on the blog about issues (Outlook, Windows, etc.), which I've briefly summarize in a blog post.

There are a few issues, that has been reported by German blog readers. Here is a short list, what's causing issues:

  • Some users of Outlook Classic are reporting, that the August 2026 update is causing the issue, that images in their signatures are not shown anymore. Instead, only a "red X" is displayed. Even if you manually reinsert them, they disappear again after saving. Outlook Classic. All Office versions are affected in some cases.
  • .NET 8.0.30 Security Update for x64 Client (KB5122104) will be installed again and again. A fix might be: Download the package and install it manually.
  • VMware tools update issues: Du to some "reboots" a user reported, that his VMware hosts can't install the VMware tools anymore. He provided a workaround for updating this tools manually.
  • Windows freezes after 5 minutes; I got several reports affecting mostly older pc's; the culprit is an older UEFI firmware that collides with secure boot certificate updates initiated from August 2026 updates.

Further details and possible workarounds may be found within the German edition of this blog post. [Use the build in translator, to read the text in English].
