[German]The August 2025 updates introduced various bugs in Windows, which Microsoft has since confirmed. On some Windows systems (clients, servers), the upgrade to new versions fails with error 0x8007007F. In addition, the reset and restore functions are reportedly broken on some Windows versions.
Patch day August 2025 for Windows
Microsoft released on August 12, 2025 various cumulative security updates for Windows clients and servers, which I described in the posts Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (August 12, 2025) and Patchday: Windows Server Updates (August 12, 2025).
The vulnerabilities that have been closed are described in Microsoft Security Update Summary (August 12, 2025). However, there were and still are problems (with WSUS, with SSDs), as I show in the list of links at the end of the post. But there are other problems that have been confirmed by Microsoft and partially fixed.
Reset and Recovery broken
In the support article Reset and recovery operations on some Windows versions might fail dated August 18, 2025, in the Windows Health Dashboard, Microsoft confirms a problem caused by the August updates (e.g., KB5063875) (via). After installing the August 2025 Windows security update, attempts to reset or recover the device may fail. This issue occurs when users perform one or more of the following operations:
- System > Recovery > Reset my PC
- System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update
- RemoteWipe CSP
This affects Windows 11 23H2; Windows 11 22H2; Windows 10 22H2; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019. Microsoft is working on an out-of-band update for the affected platforms and plans to release it in the next few days.
Windows upgrades fail with error 0x8007007F
In the Windows Health Dashboard, Microsoft confirms another issue in the article Upgrades to some versions of Windows might fail with error 0x8007007F, on August 18, 2025 (via). Starting August 12, 2025, some Windows upgrades may fail with error code 0x8007007F when performed via Windows Setup > Upgrade. This issue affects both client and server platforms under certain upgrade paths. The following upgrade paths are affected:
- Upgrades from Windows 10 1809 – 22H2 to Windows 11 22H2 – 23H2
- Upgrades from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022
- Upgrades from Windows Server 2019 to Windows Server 2022
Upgrades to Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 are not affected by this issue. This issue was fixed by Microsoft on August 15, 2025. Devices that were updated after this date should no longer encounter this error. If error 0x8007007F occurs, restart the update to resolve the issue.
