Update KB4057400 for Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2

Update KB4057400 (Preview of Monthly Rollup) has been released on January 19, 2018 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1. It's a non security update. The Preview Monthly Rollups provide a preview of the non-safety relevant updates for the following month – in the current case a preview to February 2018.

The preview rollup update includes improvements and fixes that were part of KB4056894 (published on January 4, 2018). It also includes these new quality enhancements as a preview of the next monthly rollup update. According to the Microsoft KB article, the update addresses the following points:

  • Addresses issue where every smart card logon to a Windows Terminal Server/Remote Desktop Server may result in a handle leak in the certprop service. Token leaks result in session leaks on computers that have installed MS16-111/KB3175024 and superseding fixes.

  • Adds support for the SHA2 server's authentication endpoint support for the Windows Server Update Services server.

For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, see the Security Update Guide. The update is optional, and if the above problems do not need to be fixed urgently, I recommend to hide the update. In February there is still enough time to deal with the update. Also note that there are known issues, detailed within Microsoft's kb article.

The monthly preview rollup update for Windows 8.1 has been described within my blog post Windows 8.1/Server 2012: Updates and AMD boot issue fix.
