Thunderbird 78.3.1 released

[German]The developers of the e-mail client Thunderbird released version 78.3.1 of the e-mail client on September 25, 2020. This is a maintenance update for the 78 main version of the e-mail client, which contains a fix for crashes. There is also a warning from the BSI for citizens for Thunderbird versions below 78.3 – but I don't really think that this is a full-blown warning.

Changes in Thunderbird 78.3.1

German blog reader Gerold points out the update in this comment (thanks for that). Thunderbird 78.3.0 should be skipped because of a crash (see release notes). In the release notes for Thunderbird 78.3.1 only one change is listed:

Thunderbird crashed after updating to 78.3.0

For Thunderbird 78.3.0 planned for 22.9.2020 the following changes are listed (also valid for 78.3.1):

  • OpenPGP: Improved decryption performance with large messages
  • OpenPGP: Do not show external key UI when disabled by preference
  • Account setup wizard will now open a popup when connecting to a server with a self-signed SSL/TLS certificate
  • Installation of "legacy" MailExtensions now disabled
  • Reply-To header moved in compose window; now appears under From header
  • Calendar: Sidebar UI improvements

In addition, the following bug fixes are included:

  • Selecting "Cancel" on the Master Password prompt at startup incorrectly reported corrupted OpenPGP data
  • OpenPGP: Creating a new key pair did not automatically select it for use
  • Dragging & Dropping recipient pills resulted in lost pills when an error was present
  • Spellcheck suggestions were unreadable in dark theme
  • Calendar: Multiple password prompts opened
  • Linux Distributions: UI was not rendered completely when built without updater
  • MailExtensions: browser.folders.delete failed on IMAP folders

In addition, there are various security fixes, but all of them are moderately rated. A known issue is that the 'message list is not focused at startup'.

System requirements

The system requirements for the different operating system versions (see also):

  • Windows: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
  • Mac: Mac OS X 10.9 or higher
  • Linux: GTK+ 3.4 or higher

The download is available here. According to the blog post Thunderbird 68.x: Update to version 78.x is shipped, Thunderbird 68.x should be updated to 78.x. I was offered the update when I wrote that post, but I didn't have it installed at that time. Now the upgrade is not offered for my Thunderbird 68.12.0. The Mozilla developers probably have disabled the upgrade(probably because of the crash problem). The Thunderbird is free of charge.
