Windows 11: Login error for new users fixed (Sept. 2022)

Windows[German]Microsoft has once again fixed a bug in Windows 11 (21H2) that was caused by an update. The bug prevented a user login for a newly created user account. The cause of this problem is the preview update KB5016691 from August 25, 2022. Let's see if this problem is fixed by the time the security updates are released on September 13, 2022.

The information can be found in the Windows status area in th Known issue section of Windows 11 in the section Unable to sign in after adding a new Microsoft Account user in Windows. As of September 6, 2022, Microsoft has left the following information there:

After installing KB5016691 and adding a new Microsoft Account user in Windows, you may be unable to sign in for a short period of time after the initial restart or logout. The issue only affects the newly added Microsoft account user and only when logging in for the first time.

This issue only affects devices running Windows 11 version 21H2, after adding a Microsoft account. Active Directory domain user accounts or Azure Active Directory accounts are not affected.

Apparently, testers who have already installed the August 25, 2022 Preview Update KB5016691 noticed this. Microsoft notes that those affected will simply have to wait a certain amount of time. Literally, it says as a workaround:

after a short time. You have to wait until the lock screen is displayed again, then you can log in as expected.

Currently, Microsoft has decided to fix the issue via Known Issue Rollback (KIR). One thing to note is that it can take up to 24 hours for the fix to automatically roll out to consumer devices and unmanaged enterprise devices. However, this should have happened by now. Restarting your Windows device may help the solution apply to your device faster.

For managed enterprise devices that have an affected update installed and are experiencing this issue, administrators can resolve the issue by installing and configuring a special Group Policy. The special group policy can be found at Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> KB5016691 220722_051525 Known Issue Rollback -> Windows 11 (Original Version). The Group Policy file can be downloaded from the following link. (via)
