Windows 11: Compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology

Windows[German]Microsoft has acknowledged compatibility issues with the drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology on Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2. This can lead to BlueScreens and audio problems during operation. Microsoft has blocked the feature update to Windows 11 version 22H2 on affected systems.

Microsoft has documented the issue on the Windows Release Healt Status page for Windows 11 on September 22, 202. They have published the post Compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers and Windows 11.

Intel and Microsoft have identified compatibility issues with certain versions of Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) drivers on Intel 11th Gen Core processors in conjunction with Windows 11. Windows 11 devices with the affected Intel SST driver may run into a BlueScreen error.

Affected systems are those with the Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller driver (should appear under System Devices in Device Manager and have the file name IntcAudioBus.sys). The problems concern a file version of or of the driver. Only devices with an Intel 11th Gen Core processor and the mentioned Intel SST driver version should be affected.

Microsoft has therefore set a compatibility lock for devices with affected Intel SST drivers. This affects systems running Windows 11 version 22H2 or Windows 11 version 21H2. These systems will not be offered upgrades to the affected Windows 11 versions. If Update Compliance is used in enterprises, the protection IDs are:

Windows 11, Version 21H2: 36899911
Windows 11, Version 22H2: 41291788

To fix the problem, users need to check with their device manufacturer (OEM) to see if an updated driver is available and install it. This issue is resolved by updating the Intel® Smart Sound Technology drivers to version and later or and later.

Important. Later versions only refer to the last part of the version number. To fix this problem, versions 10.30.x are not newer than versions 10.29.x.

Once the system has been updated to a compatible version of the Intel® Smart Sound Technology drivers, the system should update to Windows 11 (21H2 or 22H2). Please note that it may take up to 48 hours before the upgrade to Windows 11 is offered (unless other upgrade blocks are set).
