Windows 10 2022 Update (22H2) released (Oct. 18, 2022)

Windows[German]Microsoft has – as I expected – released Windows 10 22H2 (official name is Windows 10 2022 Update) as a feature update on October 18, 2022. In addition, ISO installation media is available for upgrading older Windows versions. Here's an overview of what to know regarding this feature update.

Announcement on the Windows blog

Microsoft Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, John Cable has officially announced the release on the Windows blog in the post How to get the Windows 10 2022 Update. This update is expected to offer a very limited amount of new features and functionality. Rather, Microsoft promises (for the Xth time) that they have focused on improving stability.

Support for 18 to 30 months

As with previous Windows 10 releases, the Windows 10 2022 Update will receive support with security updates for 18 or 30 months, depending on the variant.

  • Windows 10 22H2 Home and Pro editions will receive security updates for 18 months
  • Windows 10 22H2 Enterprise and and Education, on the other hand, will receive security updates for 30 months.

Microsoft will keep Windows 10 in support until October 14, 2025, and provide it with annual feature updates as well as security updates.

How to get Windows 10 22H2?

Windows 10 22H2 is available for all users of compatible computers that are already running Windows 10 version 20H2. However, the distribution of the new feature update via Windows Update is done in a staged rollout. First, newer machines with known compatibility will be offered the upgrade. Later, the circle of machines will then be expanded by Microsoft.

compatible machine can open the Settings page, and then go to the Update & Security category. Under Windows Update, the Check for updates button should then be selected.

Microsoft writes that eligible devices may also be offered the option to upgrade to Windows 11. The following screenshot shows the Windows Update page from my German test system, which is not compatible with Windows 11. However, the "next" feature update for Windows 10 is offered there.

Windows Update (22H2)

If the update to version 22H2 is displayed, you can simply select the Download and install option. Once the download is complete and the feature update can be installed, the Windows 10 user will be notified. Then, a suitable time can be chosen to complete the installation and restart your device to ensure that the update does not interrupt your activities.

On my test machine, the following picture emerged. Windows Update started checking for updates right away and then automatically downloaded and installed the feature update for Windows 10 version 21H2 that was not yet installed. However, the feature update to Windows 10 version 22H2 was offered in the lower pane and the Download and Install option was available as a hyperlink.

Windows Update (22H2) Installation

However, both pending feature updates for Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 were downloaded on the test system – a reboot in the meantime caused the download to start anew. Microsoft's solution is not quite optimal if a feature update is pending.

More information about the status of the Update 2022 rollout, known issues and new information can be found on the Windows Release Health page for Windows 10.

With status of October 18, 2022, the post Update might fail to install and you might receive a 0x800f0922 error can already be found there. It is possible that the security update KB5012170 for the Secure Boot DBX cannot be installed. Microsoft is investigating this error. However, the update is known to be problematic (see links at the end of the article). Updating the UEFI of the machine can help here.

Also available via WSUS/ConfigMgr

Microsoft states that the feature update to Windows 10 22H2 will also be made available in managed environments of enterprises in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as well as in (SCCM) Configuration Manager, as well as via Windows Update for Business. Furthermore, the installation image is available for download as an ISO file from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).

Obtain Windows 10 22H2 ISO file

It is also possible to download the installation image of Windows 10 22H2 as an ISO file directly (and without accessing the VLSC) from Microsoft's servers. One option is to test if the updated Media Creation Tool (MediaCreationTool22H2.exe) downloads the Windows 10 22H2 and saves it to an installation media.

Alternatively, there is an option to get the ISO files directly from Microsoft's download servers. I had described one way how this works in a browser in the post Tip: Windows 10 ISO direct download from MS via Chrome. Another option is described in the following tweet.

Windows 10 ISO-Download von adguard

The web site adguard allows you to select the desired Windows version including language and variant (32/64 bit). A download link to the Microsoft server for the ISO installation file is then generated. The link is valid for 24 hours and loads the installation image directly into an ISO file. This can then be written to a USB installation medium using tools such like Rufus.
