Are there Outlook 365 crashes again (December 2022)?

[German]Users of Microsoft Outlook (365) suffer from crashes every now and then, which occur after any updates. In September 2022 there was such a case, which was then fixed in October 2022. Now a user has contacted me who has Microsoft Outlook crashes again in his environment, with Microsoft's workarounds not helping. I've posted it here on the blog, maybe there are more affected.

Review of crash issues

In August 2022, users were annoyed by Microsoft Outlook 365 crashes. The application was terminated again by a runtime error shortly after it was launched. I had reported about this issue in the article Microsoft: Workaround for Outlook crash; rollback of Microsoft 365 to version 2205. Once users launch the Outlook application on the desktop, it opens briefly after loading the profile and processing, and then stops responding.

As of September 5, 2022, Microsoft had published a support article Outlook closes shortly after it is opened with hints on a fix for these crashes. Those who were affected could check an entry in the registry in the key mentioned below as a workaround.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities

If the Reg_SZ value EmailAddress is empty in the relevant subkey for the profile (see the following screenshot), the crash probably occurred in the above case.

Outlook registry entry EmailAddress

In the article Microsoft: Workaround for Outlook crash; rollback of Microsoft 365 to version 2205 I reported about this issue and gave details about the workaround. Then in October 2022 there was a fix for this bug, which I mentioned in the blog post Microsoft releases fix for Outlook 365 crashes at startup (Oct. 5, 2022).

Are there any new crashes?

In the blog post Microsoft releases fix for Outlook 365 crashes at startup (Oct. 5, 2022) blog reader Rick left this comment on Dec. 27, 2022, reporting renewed Outlook crashes in his environment.

Issue seems to recurr:

Faulting application name: OUTLOOK.EXE, version: 16.0.15928.20198, time stamp: 0x63a4b3e1
Faulting module name: mso20win32client.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x63a3d460

Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

Happens to quite a bunch of devices at our company. However, in our case the missing registry entry that was previously said to have caused the issue is in place.

In a nutshell: In his corporate environment, Outlook version 16.0.15928.20198 crashes due to a bug in the mso20win32client.dll file. But the above workarounds are useless because the registry entries are there.

Addendum: Recived an answer via the tweet above where a person confirmed Outlook crashes on 7 systems of more than 10,000. Question: Anyone else who has observed these crashes?
