Windows 11 22H2: Fix for script error in Group Policy Preferences (GPP)

Windows[German]Good news for Windows 11 client administrators (version 22H2). Microsoft has fixed the script error in Group Policy Preferences (GPP) in the preview updates from the end of March 2023 and will generally roll out this fix on Patchday in April 2023. This should eliminate the annoying crashes, for example in the Task Scheduler or Group Policy Management Editor.

What is the GPP bug about?

Under Windows 11 Professional or Enterprise, an administrator can use the Group Policy Management Editor to perform administrative tasks there. In the Computer Configuration -> Preferences -> Control Panel Settings branch (or the German equivalents), users and groups can be managed, services can be viewed, and much more. The Control Panel functions are available there (see the following screenshot).

Problem was that this never worked in Windows 11 22H2 (since its release in November 2022) because the call immediately aborted with a script error. Blog reader Markus K. had pointed out this problem to me in early December 2022. The details were taken up by me at that time in the blog post Bug causes script error in Group Policy Preferences (GPP) e.g. for Task Scheduler.

A fix from Microsoft

Blog reader Chris Hill left recently this comment to my article Bug causes script error in Group Policy Preferences (GPP) e.g. for Task Scheduler and wrote:

According to Joe Lurie at Microsoft it should be fixed in the '3D (March 2023 4th Tuesday "optional" updates)' or the April patch Tuesday updates – I asked at the recent Windows Office Hours event.

Chris had linked to his post in the Microsoft Techcommunity article Windows Office Hours: March 23, 2023, where he asked the question about the bug described above and referenced my blog post. There, Joe Lurie wrote on March 23, 2023 that he believed the bug was fixed and would be rolled out in the March 2023 preview updates and April 2023 security patches.

I then checked my blog post Windows 11 22H2: Preview Update KB5023778 (March 28, 2023), and indeed, Microsoft lists the following fix for the preview update.

This update affects the Group Policy Management Console. It addresses a scripting error in the Group Policy Preferences window.

So exactly the script error in Windows 11 22H2 that I described above. So if you need an urgent remedy, you can apply the fix with the preview update of March 28, 2023. The bug fix should then be rolled out to all Windows 11 22H2 clients on April 11, 2023 (Patchday, B-Week).
