[German]Security update KB5034765 for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 from 13 February 2024 failed for some users during installation with the error code 0x800F0922. Microsoft has now confirmed that there is a problem with this update. At the same time, a workaround has been published that should allow the failed update installation to be successfully completed.

Update KB5034765 for Windows 11 23H2-22H2
Cumulative Update KB5034765 for Windows 11 (23H2-22H2) ships quality improvements and security patches. Microsoft states the following highlights in the support article:
- New! The Copilot in Windows icon now appears on the right side of the system tray on the taskbar. Also, the display of Show desktop at the rightmost corner of the taskbar will be off by default. To turn it back on, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. You can alsoright-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.
- Note Windows 11 devices will get this new functionality at different times. Some of these new features roll out gradually using controlled feature rollout (CFR) to consumers.
- This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Install error 0x800F0922
However, some users ran into the problem that the KB5034765 update could not be installed. It ran up to 93% and then cancelled the installation with the error 0x800F0922. In this German comment, a German blog reader describes this behavior:
Hello, the KB5034765 update could not be installed on 2 PCs at the customer's premises. The update is cancelled after a restart (at approx. 93%). The error code 0x800f0922 is displayed.
The error has been confirmed by other users. The whole thing is somewhat unfortunate, as this update closes the Internet Shortcut Files Security Feature Bypass vulnerability CVE-2024-21412, which was attacked by the APT group Water Hydra (see my blog post Windows vulnerability CVE-2024-21412: Attacks by the APT group Water Hydra).
Microsoft confirms the error
Microsoft Microsoft has published the article The February 2024 security update might fail to install on 26 February 2024 in the Known Issues of the Windows 11 Health status page. It states that Windows 11 devices attempting to install the February 2024 security update (KB5034765) released on 13 February 2024 may experience installation errors. The system may no longer respond to 96%. The following error message may be displayed during the update installation:

"Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes. Please keep your computer on".
If this error occurs, the error code "0x800F0922" may be entered in the Windows event display. Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 are affected when the update is installed.
Microsoft is working on a solution to this problem and intends to provide an update in one of the next versions. Until this fix is available, the problem can be tackled using a workaround. To do this, the hidden folder C:\$WinREAgent, which prevents the update installation, must be deleted. This may require a restart. Afterwards, the installation of the February 2024 security update should be successful.
Addendum: In an addendum dated 29 February 2024, Microsoft described two more methods for deleting the above folder.
