Operating system/Windows share (end of March 2025); Windows 11 jumps

Windows[German]We have April 2025 and Statcounter's figures on operating system distribution on the desktop are available again for March 2025. Since Windows 10 will no longer be supported in October 2025, many users will only be able to use Windows 11. Could Windows 11 finally see a jump in usage?

Operating system share on all platforms

The website statcounter.com has published the market shares of various operating systems (desktop, mobile devices). Android accounted for 45.58% at the end of March 2025 (previous month: 45.49%), a further slight decline. Windows has risen from 25.35% in the previous month to 25.86% market share. Apple has fallen slightly in user favor with 18.08% (previously 18.26%) for iOS, while macOS has fallen to 4.92% (previously 5.32%). Linux has a meagre 1.45% market share (previously 1.38% ). These could be the normal fluctuations of the "measurement".

Desktop operating systems share

For desktop systems, the website statcounter.com gives the market share of various operating systems for Windows at 71.72% (previous month 70.54%, i.e. a slight increase). macOS is at 13.66% (from 15.77%), while Linux runs on 3.99% (previously 3.82%) of systems. ChromeOS from Google reaches 1.86% (previously 1.80%) of desktop systems.

The list of Windows operating system shares on the desktop then shows this picture: Windows 10 comes in at 54.23% (previous month 58.83%) and has dropped significantly, while Windows 11 has improved to 42.66% (previously 38%). People seem to be switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11 after all. Windows 7 is still running on 2.22% (previously 2.3%) of systems, while Windows 8.1 hardly plays a role at 0.28%.

Windows 10 is still number one on desktop systems and is likely to remain so in the coming months.

Browser: Chrome kills everything

It was interesting for me to take a look at the browser distribution on this Statcounter page. The Google Chrome browser is the undisputed leader with a market share of 66.16% (previously 66.29%). Apple's Safari browser comes in at 17.62% (previously 18.01%), which means it is falling, while Microsoft's Edge is languishing at 5.17% (previously 5.33%). Firefox even comes in at a meagre 2.52% (previously 2.63%).

I do not want Windows 11, ever.

It would be a great public service ton this site to know how one goes about purchasing the ESU for Windows 10. For obvious reasons Microsoft does not have info on this – that I have found.

If I know, how to order ESU für private W10 users, I will publish a blog post. But MS had not announced details yet.

My recommendation: Have a look on Linux; have a look on Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC (either 2019 oder 2021), even with used license; or have a look at ACROS Security 0patch agent (5 more years a secure Windows 10). A lot options …

        Thanks.

Actually this is not for a private user, it's a (very small) business with (very big) customers. But we only need it for two PCs as they run vital LOB software that must remain on Windows. MS site(s) are obtuse to the point of worthlessness and provide, as far as I have seen, no "buy now" options/links.
