SSU KB4601390 for Windows 10

Servicing Stack Update KB4601390 had been shipped since February 9, 2021 (Patchday), for Windows 10 version 1507 (RTM) and more builds. After installing this SSU, machines running Windows 10/Server 2016, users experienced hangs at 24% of the progress bar when installing the further security updates. According to this status page, the following Windows 10 versions were affected:

  • Client: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB
  • Server: Windows Server 2016

The installation then did not comes to a successful end, i.e. security updates could no longer be installed. The remedy was to reboot the system and perform the following steps in an administrative prompt (see).

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore *.bak
Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download *.bak
Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 *.bak

The steps reset the Windows Update component store with the update packages. Afterwards, the Windows machine has to be restarted again. Then the new SSU package KB5001079 (Servicing stack update for Windows 10: February 12, 2021) should be installed automatically via Windows Update. This SSU corrects the error of the old update KB4601390. Afterwards, the security updates from February 2020 should also be able to be installed on the affected machines again.
