I had blogged about the problems caused by the Windows security updates of January 11, 2022 in the blog post Microsoft Microsoft Januar 2022 Patchday Revisions (2022/01/14). The Out-of-band Updates from January 17, 2022 are supposed to fix various bugs, according to Microsoft. This Microsoft status page already has the notices.

Out-of-band Updates for Windows 11/Server 2022

As of 1/17/2022, Microsoft has released the following special updates for Windows (clients and servers) to address the issues listed.

Update KB5010796 for Windows Server 2022

Update KB5010796 is available for Windows Server 2022 and upgrades the operating system build to 20348.473. The update corrects the following issues and introduces the following changes:

  • Addresses a known issue that might cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections that contain a Vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Addresses a known issue that might cause Windows Servers to restart unexpectedly after installing the January 11, 2022 update on domain controllers (DCs).
  • Addresses an issue that prevents Active Directory (AD) attributes from being written properly during a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) modify operation when you make multiple attribute changes.
  • Addresses an issue that might prevent removable media that is formatted using the Resilient File System (ReFS) from mounting or might cause the removable media to mount in the RAW file format. This issue occurs after installing the January 11, 2022 Windows update.

The update includes the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU), but requires that the August 10, 2021 KB5005039 update already be installed. The out-of-band updateis offered via Windows Update and in the Microsoft Update Catalog, but not via WUfB and WSUS. Regarding the known issues (RDP authentication with smartcard, has been corrected via KIR), please refer to support article KB5010796.

Update KB5010795 for Windows 11

Update KB5010795 for Windows 11 clients raises the OS build to 20348.473. The update addresses the following issues:

  • Addresses a known issue that can cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Addresses an issue that can prevent removable media that is formatted with the robust file system (ReFS) from being recovered or cause the removable media to be deployed in RAW file format. This issue occurs after installing the January 11, 2022 update for Windows.

The update includes the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU). The special update is offered via Windows Update and in the Microsoft Update Catalog, but not via WUfB and WSUS. Installing the update can, as a known issue, lead to rendering errors with certain image editing programs (see support post and my blog post Windows 11: Microsoft confirms issues with false colors displayed). A solution is expected for the end of January 2022.
