Windows[German]Since the release of Windows 11, users have been complaining about problems with color management and that the use of ICC color profiles does not work. Now Microsoft has officially confirmed the problem and is investigating the whole thing. Here is a brief overview of this issue.

User complaints about color management

If you search the internet for terms like "Windows 11 color wrong" you will find quite a number of hits. On reddit.com someone posted this post in October 2021 with a number of examples.

Does Anyone also Notice Pictures are displayed in wrong ColorSpace in Windows 11 Photo App?

I am not talking about corlor management.

In my PC it it obviously images are displayed in wrong Color Space.

Which slightly less colorful.

You may reproduce this just side by side open any images in (MS) Paint and (MS) Photo.

The Another best evidence is that thumbnails are in the correct color.

There, the user compares various pictures in the photo app and in Paint. Even I can see that the colors vary a lot between the two applications. A number of other users confirm these observations, and someone refers to this reddit.com post, which already states a broken color management in Windows 10 and asks whether it is better in Windows 11.

Any news on Color Management?

For those us working with color-managed productions, requiring frequent monitor calibrations, using .icc profiles and such, we know the integration in Windows 10 was abysmal. Half the apps aren't color managed, even the desktop background isn't color managed, it's a real nightmare to work with.

Does anyone know if Windows 11 has better color management support? I'm not holding my breath but you never know.

Here, other users could not give the thread creator hope for improvement. In the Microsoft Techcommunity there is a post Many applications don't inherit display's colour profile (Windows 11 22000.100), since August 1, 2021, which points out the problem with color management. At that time Windows 11 was still "beta" and not generally released. But on October 21, 2021, there is another post in the tech community with the title Windows 11 color management not working? Chrome on secondary display is not color managed, which criticizes a broken or non-functioning color management.

Microsoft never tires of advertising its Surface tablets with Windows 10 or Windows 11 for design professionals. But somehow, the tinker's shop from Redmond doesn't really seem to get anything right. A non-functioning color management is deadly for professional work when it comes to color calibrations. And if something like this has been known since August 2021, it's an indictment of the developers. Anyway, I was pretty gobsmacked when I saw the above postings and the images shown with distorted colors.

Microsoft admits to problems

On the Windows 11 status page, as of December 24, 2021, Microsoft has now admitted the problem in some clarity – Has Windows Latest noticed. The status entry states:

Applications using Win32 APIs to render colors might not work as expected

After installing Windows 11, some image editing programs might not render colors correctly on certain HDR displays. This is frequently observed with white colors, which could display in bright yellow or other colors.

This issue occurs when certain color-rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected, and color profile options available in the Windows 11 Settings page, including Microsoft Color Control Panel, are expected to function correctly.

The message is that applications under Windows 11 that use the Win32 APIs do not display colors as expected. This could affect graphics editing programs that display colors distorted on the monitor. Microsoft is working to fix this bug and hopes to have a fix by the end of January 2022.
