Outlook bugs: Fix for contacts overlay; workaround for password problem

[German]Brief addendum from this week for Outlook users or administrators. Microsoft seems to have fixed the bug that the Outlook Contacts view covers "People" windows as of October 11, 2022. Also, I have a workaround for the problem with Outlook suddenly requesting a password to sync with the email server. Both issues had been addressed in posts here on the blog.

Bug: Outlook Contacts "People" view obscures window

Users had to issues with a bug in Microsoft Outlook at the beginning of October 2022 in Office 2016 – 2021 (with the Click-2-Run variant). After updating to version 2209 (build 15629.20156), the contact window in the people view hides half of the Outlook window. The window could not be closed.

Outlook cannot display contacts in People View

Microsoft has confirmed the bug in the support post Outlook cannot display contacts in People View from October 4, 2022 – and I had reported about the problem in the blog post Microsoft Outlook bug after update: Outlook Contacts "People" view hides window. There is also a trick outlined to mitigate the problem. By now, this should no longer be necessary, as Microsoft has probably fixed this bug. In this German comment, a blog reader writes that the bug no longer occurs:

Hello,

since the morning of October 11, 2022, the bug in question (at least under MS Office Professional 2019 C2R 64bit with the same version and build #) did not occur again. Let's hope that the other affected editions were fixed at the same time.

A second blog reader confirms the same in another comment (thanks to both readers for pointing this out). Can this be confirmed for other Office C2R versions?

Workaround for Outlook password problem

As of August 29, 2022, in the blog post Office 365: Outlook suddenly requests password (August 29, 2022), I had reported on an issue that was bothering some Office 365 administrators. A reader had reported that individual Outlook users were complaining that Microsoft Outlook suddenly requests a password. Here's a comment:

Good day,

We have now received calls from almost all clients using Office 365 (Online Plan 1, i.e. Outlook only) that the password is being requested again. No updates have been applied, different Outlook versions (2016/2019) and different Windows versions are in use and nothing has been changed on the accounts. Since we specify and set up the complex passwords, the clients of course don't have them in their heads and so it's a bit tedious.

Affected only a few users, but I had several confirmations from the readership. I had outlined two scenarios in the blog post where the problem can occur. But it doesn't seem to have really been the cause.

Now blog reader Rolf G. has commented in the English language blog. The password request can be disabled by removing the registry entry EnableADAL.

Had the same Problem Today with a Customer

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity
Delete DWORD key named EnableADAL.

Under the same registry key, Delete DWORD key named DisableADALatopWAMOverride.

Outlook started without prompting

This is the same fix I described in late September 2022 in the blog post Fix for sporadic login error 0xC0070057 in Office apps and Teams. Maybe it will help if anyone else is affected.

Das ist übrigens die gleiche Lösung, die ich  Ende September 2022 im Blog-Beitrag beschrieben habe. Vielleicht hilft es, falls noch jemand betroffen sein sollte.
