Microsoft Defender bug reports incorrect BIOS update notifications

[German]Owners of Dell devices running Windows may currently be surprised by Defender false positives reporting a "BIOS update."

This appears to affect Dell devices running Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Windows and suddenly occurred on October 2, 2025. Microsoft has published a notice DZ1163521 (requires login with an authorized user account; a copy can be found here, and a summary can be found here).

Defender false BIOS Update alarm

Bleeping Computer was apparently the first to see the Microsoft announcement and picked up on it here. Microsoft writes that some users received false Microsoft Defender for Endpoint warnings (probably along the lines of "Update your BIOS immediately!"). The warning criticized incorrect BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) versions on the devices, even though the BIOS was up to date.

On October 2, 2025, Microsoft wrote that it had discovered that a code error in the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint logic that retrieves vulnerabilities for Dell devices was causing this issue. A fix has already been developed to resolve the bug. This fix is to be included in the next Defender update. Were any of our readers affected?
