Windows 10 V1903: Known Issues – Part 1

[German]Although the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) has been released to the public since May 21, 2019, this does not mean that all bugs have been fixed. On the contrary, there are a number of fat problems and show stoppers where Microsoft blocks the function update to V1903.

Similar to Windows 10 V1809, Microsoft has published a list of known issues for Windows 10 May 2019 update (version 1903). This list is available here and when writing this blog post refers to the OS build 18362.116 created by KB4505057.

Windows 10 V1903 Bekannte Probleme

With some of the described problems I had my Deja vue, I know it in a similar form from earlier Windows 10 upgrades, especially version 1809.

Issues with brightness control on Intel GPUs

There are problems with the brightness control after a upgrading to Windows 10 V1903. Microsoft writes about it.

The brightness of the display may not respond to settings.

Microsoft and Intel have identified an issue with driver compatibility on devices that have been configured with certain Intel display drivers.

After you upgrade to Window 10, version 1903, you can change the brightness settings and it looks as if the changes you made will take effect, but the actual display brightness does not change.

Status: Microsoft has stopped an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1903 on devices with certain Intel drivers. The device cannot be upgraded and Microsoft does not recommend a manual upgrade.

Audio does not work with Dolby Atmos headphones and home theater

After upgrading to Windows 10, version 1903, Dolby Atmos for home cinema (free extension) or Dolby Atmos for headphones (paid extension) no longer works. The licenses were previously purchased through the Microsoft Store. Audio output is lost due to a license configuration error.

This occurs due to a problem with a Microsoft Store license component where licensees cannot connect to the Dolby Access app and activate Dolby Atmos extensions.

Microsoft is investigating the issue and has blocked the upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903 for affected devices. This configuration error does not result in the loss of access to the purchased license. Once the problem is resolved, Dolby Atmos components purchased through the store should work again.

Status: Microsoft has stopped an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1903 on devices with certain Intel drivers. The device cannot be upgraded and Microsoft does not recommend a manual upgrade.

Folder in user profile empty

If known folders (e.g. desktop, document or image folders) have been redirected, an empty folder with the same name may be displayed in the %userprofile% directories after updating to Windows 10 Version 1903.

This occurs when users back up their content to OneDrive using the OneDrive Wizard, or when users back up content during the Windows Out-of-Box (OOBE) experience. This can also occur if you have manually redirected users to profile folders using the Properties dialog box (Path tab) in the File Explorer.

This issue does not cause user files to be deleted or a solution to be worked on. Windows simply created a new user profile, the redirected folders continue to exist with their contents on the target partition.

Status: Microsoft has stopped an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1903 on devices with certain Intel drivers. The device cannot be upgraded and Microsoft does not recommend a manual upgrade.

AMD RAID driver incompatibility

Microsoft and AMD have found incompatibility with AMD RAID driver versions prior to 9.2.0.105. This applies to systems with AMD Ryzen™ or AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ configured in SATA or NVMe-RAID mode. If you attempt to install the Windows 10, version 1903 update on a Windows 10-based computer with an affected driver version, the installation process stops and you receive a message such as the following:

"A driver is installed that causes stability problems in Windows. This driver is disabled. Check with your software/driver vendor for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows."

Workaround: To resolve this issue, download the latest AMD RAID drivers directly from AMD. The drivers must be version 9.2.0.105 or higher. Install the drivers on the affected computer, and then restart the installation process for the Windows 10 1903 Feature Update.

Status: Microsoft has stopped an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 1903 on devices with certain Intel drivers. The device cannot be upgraded and Microsoft does not recommend a manual upgrade.

Upgrade error with connected USB devices and SD memory cards

If an external USB device or SD memory card is connected when installing Windows 10, version 1903, the upgrade may fail with the error message "This PC cannot be upgraded to Windows 10. The exact error message is:

This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10.

Your PC has hardware that isn't ready for this version of Windows 10. No action is required. Windows Update will automatically offer this version of Windows 10 once the issue has been resolved.

Windows 10 Error: What needs your attention

This is caused by an incorrect reassignment of the media drive letters during installation. I've blogged about this issues in April within the blog post Windows 10 V1903: External USB storage as Upgrade blocker.

Workaround: Microsoft suggests, to remove all external media, such as USB devices and SD cards, from your computer and restart the installation of the Windows 10 Version 1903 Feature Update. The update should then proceed normally.

Caution: If you need to connect the external device, SD memory card, or other devices to your computer during the update, you should not manually update to Windows 10 Version 1903 using the Update Now button or Windows Media Creation Tool (MCT) until this problem is resolved. Microsoft is working on a solution and estimates that a solution will be available by the end of May.

If you create a USB stick for Setup with the Media Creation Tool, you will run into the issued during upgrade. I had mentioned this within my blog post Windows 10 Mai 2019 Update released. You can use of a DVD as an installation media. If there is no optical drive, you can mount the ISO file under Windows 10 as a virtual drive using Explorer and then run Setup.exe from that drive to start the upgrade.

The article series is continued with part 2 and probably also part 3. I will link them as soon as the articles are published.

Windows Sandbox ends with error "0x80070002"

Addendum: This is a bug that has been mentioned within many German forums. Now Microsoft has confirmed the bug: The Windows Sandbox may not start with "ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (0x80070002)" on devices where the operating system language is changed during the update process when installing Windows 10, version 1903. Microsoft is working on a solution.
