Windows 10 Bug: USB printers not detected

[German]In Windows 10, a bug in versions 1903 through 2004 can cause printers connected to USB ports to no longer be recognized. Microsoft has now confirmed this issue.

The problem is more than stupid, because the use case should occur frequently – especially with people who turn printers off to save energy and only turn them on when needed – is the case with me, for example. Microsoft describes the problem like this in this support article:

If you connect a USB printer to Windows 10 version 1903 or later, then shut down Windows and disconnect or shut off the printer, when you start Windows again the USB printer port will not be available in the list of printer ports. Windows will not be able to complete any task that requires that port.

In other words: If the USB printer is not accessible (disconnected or switches off) for the operating system when Windows 10 version 1903 or higher is started, the printer is not recognized. Microsoft explains the cause in this way:

  • If the driver for the USB printer contains a Language Monitor, the OpenPortEx callback function of the Language Monitor would not be called.  As a result, the user cannot fulfill operations dependent on the operation of the Language Monitor.
  • In the "Devices and Printers" control panel, when selecting [Print Server Properties] > [Port] tab, the port for the USB printer (such as "USB001") would not appear in the list of printer ports.  As a result, the user cannot fulfill operations dependent on the existence of the port.

Microsoft suggests turning on the printer on the USB port before booting Windows 10. You can check whether a printer is recognized in the settings page (accessed via the start menu) under Devices -> Printers & Scanners -> Print Server Properties ->Ports. Microsoft wants to fix this bug sometime later. (via Bleeping Computer)

One would think this feature would work perfectly as it did in windows 7, but we can all see that Microsoft is far more interested in stealing our data rather than having a good operation system.
