Windows 10/11: Microsoft will fix performance issues (Feb. 2022)

Windows[German]Windows 10 and Windows 11 are experiencing performance issues, especially when accessing storage media, as a result of the November 2021 updates. There are indications that Microsoft is working on eliminating these problems through updates. However, it is currently unclear to me how much of these issues have already been patched and whether more fixes are expected on the February 2022 patchday.

Windows 10 performance issues

With the January 2022 security updates, which were released on January 11, 2022, Microsoft has, after all, caused significant problems (see links at the end of the article). These include performance issues in Windows 10, which I have not previously addressed here on the blog.

Performance issues with January 2022 updates

The January 11, 2022 cumulative updates KB5009543 (for Windows 10 Version 20H2 – 21H2) and KB5008876 (for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8) vom aused various performance issues for users. In Microsoft Answers there is this thread about the January 2022 updates where a user describes his problems.

Cumulative updates KB5008876 and KB5009543 completely broke my gaming experience.

I really have no idea how or why, but all my games ran smoothly right before these updates and now they are literally unplayable.
Choppy frame rates or flat out frame freezes for up to 3 seconds, audio clipping/skipping, horrible, horrible lag.
Please fix this! Thank you!

If you browse through the forums as well as the linked Microsoft Answers thread about the above updates, there are a number of messages (see also) in which users vent about broken functions or performance problems caused by the updates. These range from a slow Windows startup (see) to hangs on the desktop to the frame rate or audio playback issues outlined above. The colleagues from Bleeping Computer picked up on these effects a few days ago in this article and linked further web hits. The colleagues claim to be able to reproduce the problems on several notebooks with update KB5009543.

Preview Update KB5009596 fixes the issues

As of Jan. 25, 2022, Microsoft has released optional update KB5009596 , which fixes a number of issues in Windows 10 – see Windows Server Preview Update (Jan. 25, 2022). The cumulative preview update KB5009596 is available for Windows 10 20H2 to version 21H2, as well as Windows Server 20H2. Bleeping Computer colleagues then installed optional update KB5009596 on the affected devices and found that it fixed the performance issues. Since the fixes from these optional preview updates will be included in the security updates on the next patchday, all Windows 10 users will get these fixes.

Windows 11 Performance issues

There are also performance problems with Windows 11, especially with SSDs and HDDs, if I can believe this article. I had picked up the topic in the article Windows 11: Performance issues with NVMe-SSDs?. Microsoft has already tried to address these issues with patches in December 2021 (see Windows 11: Microsoft fixes NVMe SSD Performance Issue).

This article states that users would have noticed a performance improvement with NVMe and SSDs units even with the preview update KB5008353 (see Windows 11 / Windows Server 2022 Preview Update (Jan. 25, 2022)). The colleagues from Bleeping Computer write here about performance problems with the file explorer, which were also fixed by the update KB5008353 for Windows 11. Blog reader Karl emailed me his post on the patch management mailing list:

Dear group,

from a report I received the information that Windows 11 will receive an out of band update to fix significant performance issues with disk types.

A previous from November (KB5007262) OOB already addressed a problem with NTFS journaling causing massive performance impacts in Windows 11 on the OS partition.

The new fix KB5008353 address the same issue based on information at Windows Update History.

https://www.techspot.com/news/93235-windows-11-update-finally-fixes-storage-slowdowns.html

Myself tested the behavior and can confirm the problem exists in Windows 11 21H2, it is mild in Windows 11 21H2 but still worse than Windows 10 21H2.

From my observations the main issue is a high latency when writing to disks, especially NVMe building up 300-600 ms in Task Manager, while Windows 10 21H2 ranged in typical 0,1-2 ms.

I am speaking about a fresh out of box install in all cases with all drivers offered by WU for the device.

In my tests I noticed the impacts not only on the OS drive, but also external NVMe drives.

We should keep in mind that these issues in Windows could also exist in Windows Server 2022 / Windows Server 2022 Azure Edition and Azure Stack HCI 21H2 as they share a similar codebase.

Yet to question if they are more tied to Windows 11 (even though the WS2022 GUI does not, or AzHCI has no GUI) or Windows 10.

Best Regards,

Karl Wester-Ebbinghaus

So here, too, performance problems in Windows 11 are addressed, which also show up in Windows 10 21H2. These problems are caused by an update from November 2021, which is supposed to fix a bug in NTFS journaling. The preview update KB5008353 is supposed to have addressed these problems as well. With that, these fixes will probably also make their way into the security updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as their server counterparts, which will be released on February 8, 2022. However, it will be a few hours before we know whether the fixes solve the performance problems.
