FSLogix v2210 and the bugs

The release of Microsoft FSLogix v2210 caused numerous issues in enterprise environments. Windows users experienced 20-minute hangups during logins in sessions. Or the Office 365 apps (Outlook, OneDrive) request a logon to the respective services every session (e.g. daily). Here on the blog, there are the following two articles that address these errors.

In both posts, FSLogix V2210 could be determined to be the cause after the fact. The last time I wrote in the blog post FSLogix v2210: Bugs, bugs, it's terribad". Administrators had in most cases no other choice but to go back to the previous FXLogix version.

FSLogix: Hotfix 1 (2.9.8440.42104)

Via a tweet from Carl Stalhood, I came across that Microsoft has released hotfix 1 for FSLogix 2210 to fix numerous bugs.

FSLogix: Hotfix 1 (2.9.8440.42104)

Microsoft announces hotfix 1 in the techcommunity post Announcing general availability of FSLogix 2210 hotfix 1! dated March 3, 2023. The reasoning for the numerous issues reads quite strange to me. When FSLogix 2210 GA was released, the development team announced an important change in the handling of identity roaming in the Known Issues page.

Feedback from customers quickly indicated that this change was a major problem. Microsoft's FSLogix developers write that they then quickly got together with the identity team and created a configuration setting to re-enable this roaming behavior.

At this point, I somehow spontaneously ask myself the question: "Does everyone at Microsoft work quietly in their closet without looking to the right or left to see if their work might cause collateral damage?" – because such serious changes suggest the necessity of compatibility tests. Bugs would have to be noticed then, however, since the Microsoft people probably don't work under Linux. Conversely, this leads to the conclusion that Redmond no longer tests.

Anyway, the FSLogix 2210 hotfix 1 (2.9.8440.42104) can be downloaded as a ZIP archive via the link, unpacked and installed. The release notes list the following bugs as fixed:

  • Setting: Added new configuration setting (RoamIdentity). Allows legacy roaming for credentials and tokens created by the Web Account Manager (WAM) system.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where frxsvc.exe would crash when processing AppXPackages.
  • Fix: Resolved issues in handling FileIds associated with OneDrive.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue with orphaned meta files on Cloud Cache SMB providers.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where a pending rename operation would fail because the target filename was invalid.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where user sessions were cleaned up before a proper sign-out.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where ODFC incorrectly handled multiple VHDLocations.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue in how settings are applied for ObjectSpecific configurations.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where an ODFC container would not correctly detach during sign-out.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where VHD Disk Compaction would fail to cancel correctly when using Cloud Cache.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where ODFC VHD Disk Compaction would fail when RoamSearch was enabled.
  • Fix: Resolved an issue where users would be stuck at a black screen as a result of attempting to empty the Recycle Bin prior to roaming.
  • Update: Added policy for new RoamIdentity setting.

Maybe the hotfix will help 1 affected people and they can use FSLogix v2210 including hotfix again.

What is FXLogix?

FSLogix extends and enables user profiles in Windows remote computing environments. FSLogix can also be used to create more portable remote sessions when using physical devices.

"such serious changes suggest the necessity of compatibility tests". Arent the general public now the testers for the most part? Games, Software… it gets rolled out and turned into a patchwork quilt.
