After discontinuation: VMware Player, Workstation and Fusion seems to remain

Stop - Pixabay[German]After VMware discontinued many of its products with purchase licenses on sale as of 15 January 2024 and switched to subscription solutions, the question was what the future holds for desktop virtualization. Here I can give a small all-clear for users of VMware desktop virtualization products. Currently, VMware Workstation, VMware Workstation Player and VMware Fusion for the Mac are to be retained (for the time being) and continue to be sold. What has remained unclear to me is how ESXi could continue.

Windows Server 2022: Update KB5034129 kills Browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

Windows[German]I got reports from some administrators of Windows Server 2022. After they have installed the KB5034129 update from January 9, 2024 on this OS platform may no longer be able to use a browser. This actually affects all known browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Firefox. The browsers crash with a white screen when the security update is installed and can no longer be used. However, there is a workaround, which has also been discussed by administrators in comments on the blog. And I got a report, that Windows 10 22H2 may also be affected. I will summarize the situation below.

New Outlook app: "Monitoring and surveillance tool for targeted advertising"

[German]The new Microsoft Outlook app is a data protection disaster and a GDPR no-go. Following the revelation that the app transfers access data for accounts and content to Microsoft's cloud, mail vendor Proton took a closer look at the app. The app is a tracker, and an absolute no-go, as the app transfers usage data to over 700 advertising partners. The new Outlook is a kind of a "monitoring and data collection tool for targeted advertising".

Adobe Acrobat (Reader) DC 2023.008.20470

Adobe has released an optional update for Adobe Acrobat (Reader) DC to version 2023.008.20470 on January 16, 2024. It is a planned update for macOS and Windows, which is intended to fix various bugs. Broadcom ends perpetual licenses for VMware products – End of the free ESXi server?

As of January 15, 2024, Broadcom has announced that a whole range of VMware products will no longer be available for purchase with perpetual licenses. I already mentioned a few days ago that resellers will no longer be able to sell such licenses or products and will only be allowed to process a residual order backlog. This is probably also the end of the free ESXi server.

NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway vulnerabilities CVE-2023-6548 and CVE-2023-6549

Manufacturer Citrix has published a security advisory regarding the two vulnerabilities CVE-2023-6548 and CVE-2023-6549 in the above-mentioned products on January 16, 2024. One vulnerability allows DDoS attacks, while the second vulnerability allows authenticated (low privileged) remote code execution on the management interface.

Copilot Pro: Microsoft's subscription model for its products

[German]Microsoft has introduced an extension to its LLM solution Copilot. Microsoft Copilot Pro is a subscription-based approach to rolling out LLM models to both home and business users, from small businesses to large enterprises, and earning money from these solutions. With the subscription solution, users should be able to access GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo even in times of high load, while users without a subscription will be served with GPT 3.5.

Microsoft says, Teams 2.0 migration is to slow; 2/3 still on old client

Although this new client has already been available for several months and Teams 2.0 will soon be mandatory, around 2/3 of Teams users have so far refused to migrate.
