Windows: December 2023 updates fail with error 0x8007000D

Windows[German]I have got various reader reports about the installation error 0x8007000D in connection with the security updates for Windows that were rolled out on December 12, 2023. The problem is already present with the October 2023 updates, where the error occurred under Windows 10, through the cumulative updates. In the meantime, I have also received reports about Windows Server 2022. I'll summarize all the reports and have also named some causes that I have already come across.

Google Chrome 120.0.6099.110

ChromeThe release of Google Chrome 120.0.6099.109 only lasted a few hours – apparently not all users received the update. Google has since announced the relevant entry in the Google blog that Chrome for Windows has been updated to version 120.0.6099.110 in the Extended Stable Channel. Thanks to the reader for pointing this out.

ESET Server (File) Security v9.0.12013.0 fails after system reboot

Stop - Pixabay[German]December 2023 patch day from Microsoft has revealed problems on Windows Server systems where ESET File Security v9.0.12013.0 (now called "ESET Server Security") is used. Due to the restart required after the update installation, the ESET antivirus solution may then fail to work. A message then appears stating that various protection protection functions are deactivated. The cause is an expired certificate. A blog reader informed me about the problem and provided a workaround. I'll post the facts here in the blog – perhaps it will help those affected.

Massive spam wave from outlook.com to office.com accounts

After publishing the German edition of this blog post, other German readers confirmed this observation.
