Cloud withdrawal saves 37signals millions of US dollars

[German]The cloud is expensive and sometimes useless – the cloud-first strategy of some providers, which has lured users en masse to such offerings, is leading them into cost traps. Now US company 37signals has pulled the emergency brake after having to pay $3.2 million per year for cloud services. In January 2023, the announcement came to withdraw from the cloud. Now I read the news that by moving to its own data center, the company is probably saving around $1 million per year because the bill for remaining cloud services has dropped sharply. However, the figures cannot be transferred 1:1 to every company.

Cisco plans to acquire Splunk monitoring platform for $28 billion

[German]The next big takeover in the IT industry seems to be imminent. The US company Cisco has announced that it wants to take over Splunk. It's a really big deal, which will be done by a cash purchase. No idea how this will be seen by Splunk customers, especially if Cisco is seen rather critically there. Splunk's stock price has gone up while Cisco's has gone down.

Exchange Online: Retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) after October 1, 2026

Edge[German]Microsoft first updated the Edge browser in the stable channel to version 117.0.2045.35 on September 19, 2023, and then to version 117.0.2045.36 shortly thereafter. The release notes here and here respectively state, "Fixed various bugs and performance issues for the stable version." In addition, there is the Webview2 Runtime (thanks to Robert for pointing this out, given the update cadence, it's hard to follow).

CISA warns of attacks against Microsoft Word and Adobe vulnerabilities

Data leak: Microsoft AI researchers lose 38 TBytes of internal data via GitHub/Azure cloud storage

[German]Next data leak and security incident at Microsoft: Security researchers at Wiz have stumbled upon 38 terabytes of private internal data stored on an Azure Cloud Store instance via a public Microsoft AI GitHub repository. Access was enabled by a misconfigured SAS token, they say. This gigantic data leak also contained two Microsoft employees' backups of secret keys and credentials, as well as more than 30,000 internal Microsoft Teams messages.

Google Chrome 117.0.5938.88/.89

ChromeGoogle has released updates to the Google Chrome browser 117 in the stable channel for Mac, Linux and Windows on September 14, 2023. The announcement can be found on the Google blog. The stable channel has been updated to version 117.0.5938.88 for macOS and Linux. For Windows, the update updates the browser to version 17.0.5938.88/.89. According to the change log, only bugs were fixed (e.g. "Fix new badges feature to show when companion is disabled" and a bug when loading priority policies from the Windows registry). TikTok gets fined 345 million by Irish data protection authority

Paragraph[German]The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) issued its final decision regarding an investigation into TikTok Technology Limited (TTL) on September 1, 2023. The investigation examined whether the platform had complied with its obligations regarding the processing of children's personal data. A fine of 345 million euros was imposed on TikTok for violating these obligations.
