Windows 11 22H2: Issues and upgrade stoppers

Windows[German]The upgrade to Windows 11 version 22H2, which was released on September 20, 2022, doesn't seem to be a no-brainer at all. Users who have upgraded to the version are complaining about bugs – and some features like tabs in Windows Explorer won't come until October via the "Moments 1" update. Gamers are complaining about bugs, and Microsoft has already had to admit to an upgrade block on certain versions of the Intel Smart Sound Technology driver. Unofficially, there also seems to be an upgrade blocker to version 22H2 on the Microsoft IPP Class Driver.

Microsoft has released Windows 11 version 22H2 to compatible systems on September 20, 2022 – I had reported in the blog post Windows 11 2022 Update (22H2) Released. Now I got reports about issues and upgrade stoppers.

Microsoft Upgrade stopper on version 22H2

Meanwhile, an upgrade stopper to Windows 11 version 22H2 is officially confirmed, and there are unofficial upgrade stoppers that I haven't found anything about on the Microsoft status pages yet.

Intel Smart Sound Technology driver issues

I had already picked it up in the blog post Windows 11: Compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology. Microsoft has confirmed that certain driver versions for Intel Smart Sound Technology are causing problems. Microsoft has put up an upgrade stopper for the affected systems. The issue is confirmed on the Windows Release Healt Status page of Windows 11 in the post Compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers and Windows 11.

Microsoft IPP Class Driver

User Tekkie Boy has reported in the German deskmodder.de forum he gets the following message when trying to upgrade to Windows 11 version 22H2 via Windows Update:

Devices with printer using Microsoft IPP Class Driver

Your PC has hardware that isn't ready for this version of Windows. Windows Update will automatically offer you this version of Windows once the issue has been resolved.

The upgrade blocker is set by the Microsoft IPP Class Driver printer driver. This must have been set in the night of September 23, 2022. Before that the user had error 0x80070002 in the Safe OS phase. The colleagues from deskmodder.de have picked this up here.

LinuxLive USB Creator

Another upgrade blocker is LinuxLive USB Creator (see). Such blockers can be found in the folder:

C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

Search there for files with _HumanReadable.XML in the name and open them in the editor. Then look for <inventory> XML nodes. In the <Property> nodes is specified what causes the show stopper (see also here).

Bugs in Windows 11 Version 22H2

Besides the above upgrade stoppers, users who have upgraded to Windows 11 version 22H2 are annoyed by various bugs. Here's a short, incomplete list of problems that have come to my attention.

NVIDIA users report problems

Users who use their machines for gaming or graphics-heavy tasks complain about problems in connection with NVIDIA graphics cards. On reddit.com there is this thread where a user wrote:

Like some people already said, I have been experiencing insane stuttering in games. My CPU usage in games have dropped down significantly, in some from 80% to 5%. Just went back to the last update and my in game experience is much better. I would recommend waiting for them to fix that before updating.

Also on Microsoft Answers forum, there is this thread,  where one user complains that CPU usage has dropped to 5% after installing the Win 11 22H2 update, causing major delays in gaming. The thread has already received three pages of comments. Bleeping Computer colleagues have picked up more cases, which they describe in more detail in this blog post. Manuel Guzman, NVIDIA Software QA, has confirmed the issue and is requesting additional feedback from affected Reddit users. According to various reports (e.g. at deskmodder.de), the new version NVIDIA GeForce Experience v3.26 should fix the problem.

Furthere issues

On deskmodder.de, further bugs and problems are reported in this forum thread. However, the reports mostly come from individual users. If you have problems installing on incompatible hardware (installation aborts because the machine is not compatible), you can unpack the ISO, then delete the appraiserres.dll file from the Sources folder and create an empty dummy appraiserres.dll file in that folder (see).
