Windows[German]Microsoft must have quietly released an updated version of update KB4023057 (Microsoft Update Health Tools, formerly Preparatory Update or Update for Windows Update Service Components) for machines running Windows 10/11 in April 2023. The goal is to improve the reliability of the Windows update process and to find and fix update problems on Windows 10/11 systems that prevent an upgrade.

The colleagues from neowin.net noticed on April 20, 2023 that the update KB4023057 was probably distributed again for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Update KB4023057 für Windows 10/11

The purpose of this update KB4023057 is, is to fix problems in the update process that can prevent the installation of critical Windows updates in Windows 10/11. These improvements are intended to help ensure that updates are installed seamlessly on the Windows client in question. In addition, Microsoft claims to improve the reliability and security of devices running Windows 10. Microsoft now refers to the whole thing as Update Health Tools, or integrity tools for the Windows Update service components. Redmond meanwhile writes about the update, according to this support article:

  • On Windows consumer devices, this update helps remediate smooth functioning of Windows Update.
  • For commercial devices, this update is recommended for Windows Update for Business (WUfB) Deployment Service for managing Feature and Quality Updates.

The update is available for Windows 10 (21H2 – 22H2), as well as Windows 11 (21H2, 22H2), and is distributed for consumer devices via Windows Update. While it was not intended for managed environments in the enterprise environment in previous editions, Microsoft recommends installing it via Windows Update for Business (WUfB).

The update is distributed cyclically in updated versions, and installation is automatic. In contrast, it is not offered in WSUS. Further details about the current functions can be found in the support article for KB4023057.

However, Microsoft does not reveal what the update does exactly in the current support article. However, the earlier articles linked at the end of the article contain further hints (for example, the problem that updates cannot be installed due to insufficient storage space is supposed to be corrected). To check if the Microsoft Update Health Tools are working, users can check the installation files in the following folder:

Enterprise customers could check if the Update Health service is running on their devices (see also the screenshots in the support post of KB4023057). Anyone who has received the update? Were there any problems during or after installation?
