Patchday: Windows 10/Server Updates (July 9, 2024)

Lenovo L15 Gen 3: Warning about BlackScreen after BIOS update to v1.30

[German]Next warning about BIOS updates for Lenovo Thinkpad L15 – the Gen 3 models are also affected by a problem in BIOS version 1.30. A reader recently informed me that a Lenovo L15 Gen 3 (Intel) notebook broke after a BIOS update to version 1.30. The notebook ended up with a black screen. The notebook ended up with a black screen. There are indications that various Thinkpad models may be affected. This is particularly unfortunate as Lenovo has updated some BIOS versions due to UEFI vulnerabilities. Addendum: Looks like Gen 2 models are also affected.

Midnight Blizzard hack: Microsoft sends notification to customers by email that ends up in SPAM folders

[German]After Microsoft's e-mail system (Exchange Online, Outlook.com) was compromised by Russian hackers from the state sponsored group Midnight Blizzard Hackers, Microsoft recently had to admit that e-mails to customers were also affected. In an attempt to inform customers, Microsoft made the next blunder. The notifications were sent to the "Global Administrators" of the tenants of the affected companies. Notifications were not retrieved or ended up in the spam folder, or were classified as SPAM because Microsoft made further cardinal errors.

Windows Server 2019: Daily DNS failures with Event ID 404

Outlook: Old clients will be deactivated in mid-July 2024

Microsoft Teams: Teams 2.0 client distribution stopped; bug in iOS app causes issues with out-of-office notice

Teams[German]On July 1, 2024, the Teams 2.0 client was to be deployed across the board on Windows. Microsoft has stopped the automatic distribution because the automatic MS Teams 1.0 uninstallation leads to Outlook problems. And Microsoft has long had a bug in its iOS app for Teams that makes creating an out-of-office note a problem for users. The texts cannot be corrected via the app – it appears to be an array error. I'll summarize the two issues in a blog post.

OpenAI 2023 hacked – not went public till now

However, the source code behind the OpenAI LLMs was not accessible. This was probably made public by a source who leaked the information to the New York Times.

The bottom line is that this will lead to massive price increases. But CheckMK has probably also massively increased its prices in 2024, as a reader told me a few days ago (he pointed this out here in a German comment).
