Windows 10/11: Known issues (May 2023)

Windows[German]In the last few weeks, various bugs (partly due to updates but also during development) have slipped into Windows 10 and 11versions. For example, there are issues when copying files under Windows 10 and Windows 11 – the operation can fail. Furthermore, there are problems with the Windows search, the Start menu and opening apps, since January, that has been mitigated. Microsoft has acknowledged the issues and partially corrected them. For example, the problems with the language recognition (Chinese, Japanese) have been fixed via update. I summarize the points below.

Windows 11 gets support 7-Zip, RAR and GZ as archive formats in addition to ZIP

Windows[German]Microsoft has announced of the BUILD 2023 developer conference, that Windows 11 get support for further archive formats. In addition to the ZIP archive format, which has been supported for many years, other archive formats (7-Zip, RAR and GZ and more) are to be natively supported by the operating system.

Barracuda warns of attacks on email gateways via 0-day vulnerability (May 19, 2023)

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]Vendor Barracuda is warning of a 0-day vulnerability in its Email Security Gateway Appliance (ESG) that was discovered on May 19, 2023, following an attack. The vendor has since released security updates to close this vulnerability on the affected appliances on May 20 and 21, 2023. Those who use Barracuda's products and were affected should have received notification via the appliances' interface.

Critical security update (May 24, 2023) for all Zyxel firewall products – attacks in the wild

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]The Taiwanese vendor Zyxel has released a very critical security update for all security products. The security warning states that several buffer overflow vulnerabilities (CVE-2023-33009, CVE-2023-33010) are affected. I have evidence that the vulnerabilities are already being exploited in Zyxel firewall products.

Surface Pro X cameras fails – certificate expired on May 23, 2023? Workaround possible

[German]Owner of a Microsoft Surface Pro X suddenly face a big problem. The cameras of the ARM tablet fails since May 23, 2023. The forums are full of reports from affected users – and one blog reader has also contacted me because several customers are affected at once. There is a workaround of sorts to reset the date on the device to May 22, 2023.

Google deletes inactive accounts after 2 years

[German]Anyone who has a user account with Google should also use it. Otherwise its loss is imminent and there might be problems if data or email addresses etc. are connected to this account. This is what Google has announced the days in a message about the change of its guidelines for deleting inactive user accounts. It will start at the end of the year 2023.
