Windows 11 22H2: Upgrade blocker "Audio out of sync through Xbox Game Bar" removed

Windows[German]Microsoft has fixed an issue with the Xbox Game Bar that caused out-of-sync audio output on affected systems in certain situations. There was an upgrade lock to Windows 11 22H2 on these systems. Since the issue has been fixed, Microsoft will remove the upgrade lock on Windows 11 22H2 in mid of November 2022.

The Xbox Game Bar is a feature that was introduced in Windows 10. Users can display this bar by pressing the Windows key + G above a game on the screen to access certain functions there. This is because the Xbox Game Bar offers customization options that make it possible to quickly switch between a game and favorite gaming activities.

However, the problem was that this feature caused issues in certain scenarios under Windows 11 22H2, which will be released in September 2022. The sound output via the audio channels was then out of sync. Microsoft had therefore placed an upgrade stopper on Windows 11 22H2 for systems using the Xbox Game Bar app. For organizations using Update Compliance, the protection ID is 41584256.

Microsoft's official confirmation was as of November 3, 2022 on the Windows 11 22H2 Release Healt Status page. The post Audio might be out of Sync when capturing video via Xbox Game Bar states:

The Xbox Game Bar app may experience issues where the audio is out of sync when recording the game to a video file. This issue is more likely to occur if you use the "Record the last 30 seconds" feature and "Record in the background while I play" is enabled in Xbox Game Bar.

Note to developers: applications that record or process video files and use the same underlying Windows libraries or APIs as Xbox Game Bar may also be affected by this issue.

The bug was then fixed with preview update KB5018496, dated October 25, 2022. I had mentioned the update in the blog post Windows 11 22H2: Preview Update KB5018496 (Oct. 25, 2022). Those who have already updated to Windows 11 version 22H2 should install preview update KB5018496 to fix this issue (the optional KB5018496 is not installed automatically, but only found via the update search).

Microsoft plans to lift this upgrade lock for Windows 11 22H2 in mid-November 2022. Microsoft does not recommend manually updating a legacy system via the "Update now" button or via the Media Creation Tool. As soon as the upgrade blocker is lifted, the feature update to Windows 11 22H2 should be offered automatically on the affected systems.
