Windows 11: Refreshed free virtual machines for tests available

WindowsNote for people who want to test the latest versions of Windows 11 23H2 without obligation but do not want to install an installation image. Microsoft has released so-called 90-day test versions of Windows 11 (version 2310) for developers as virtual machines on October 30, 2023. These are based on Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise (patch level Sept. 2023, build 22621.2283) and are available for VMware, Hyper-V (Gen2), Virtualbox and Parallels on the Microsoft page Get a Windows 11 development environment. Microsoft confirms: The Media Creation Tool does not yet download a Windows 11 23H2 installation image

Windows[German]Let's euphemistically call it "a communication mishap that can happen". Microsoft has released Windows 11 23H2 on October 31, 2023 and also offers a Media Creation Tool (MCT) for this version. I had jokingly orated about the release date as a "Halloween update" (to scare you). At least with regard to the MCT, the oracle is true, because Microsoft has now admitted that it does not create an installation image for Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2).

Microsoft Exchange: Four 0-day Exchange vulnerabilities allows RCE attacs and data thief

Exchange Logo[English]Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) has just published four unpatched vulnerabilities (so-called 0-Days) in Microsoft Exchange. These were reported to Microsoft in September 2023 and ZDI classifies them with CVSS scores of 7.1 to 7.5. Microsoft's security experts do not consider the vulnerabilities to be so serious that they require immediate action (authentication is required for exploitation). The Microsoft developers have announced fixes "for later". This is why the Zero Day Initiative has gone public, as they still see the possibility of RCE attacks and data theft.

Windows 10 22H2 Preview Update KB5031445 installs Remote desktop connection as feature

Windows[German]With the preview update KB5031445 for Windows 10 22H2, Microsoft has installed a new "Remote Desktop Connection" entry in "Programs and Features". This feature will then be rolled out globally on Patchday in November 2023. This change has led to controversial discussions in my German blog – it will not be met with enthusiasm by all users – especially if they are using Windows 10 Home Edition.

Windows 11 23H2 Update is causing issues for some users

Windows[German]Microsoft has released its Windows 11 23H2 Update (23H2) as of October 31, 2023. Interested consumers with compatible machines can pull the update to unlock the feature on a running Windows 11 22H2. Given the release date, I had jokingly dubbed it the "Halloween Update" (to be creeped out). Now the first users are chiming in with reports of problems Windows 11 23H2 is causing them. Is nothing that occurs widely, but is annoying for those affected. And Microsoft has "admitted to a jumping icons problem".

Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2) released

Windows[German]A week ago there was speculation about when the upgrade to Windows 11 23H2 would probably be rolled out. Now Microsoft has released this feature upgrade on the evening of October 31, 2023 (it's the "Halloween" edition of this OS, so to speak, hope it won't be too spooky). The new version is available both via installation ISO files (via Media Creation Tools), and as an upgrade (offered via Windows Update) to lift compatible machines to the new build.

LOLBin with WorkFolders.exe under Windows

Windows[German]I do not know if it's widely known, but the legitimate Windows application WorkFolders.exe can be used to launch other .exe programs in the Windows System32 folder or the current folder. This allows malware to launch so-called LOLBin attacks, where legitimate operating system files are misused to execute malicious programs. WorkFolders.exe can be abused as a RunDLL substitute.
