Mirai malware variant V3G4 enables remote access to IoT devices via vulnerabilities

The Mirai variant V3G4 exploits multiple vulnerabilities in the firmware of IoT devices to allow remote access. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 security researchers observed the Mirai variant, called V3G4, from July to December 2022, and once the vulnerable devices are compromised via multiple vulnerabilities, they become fully controlled by attackers and become part of the botnet.

Edge ads on Chrome pages, disabling IE, Firefox dead after KB5022906?

Update[German]Today another small collective article around the topic Edge, Firefox and Internet Explorer. It is about the deactivation of Internet Explorer, which is supposed to happen in February 2023. With the patchday (14.2.2023) probably not everything was deactivated at IE. And with the preview update KB5022906 from February 21, 2023, there could have been collateral damage that kicks Firefox out. In addition, Microsoft has once again gone massively overboard by running large-scale ads for Edge on Google Chrome pages.

Chrome[German]Google has released updates to Google Chrome Browser 110 in the stable channel for Mac, Linux and Windows as of February 22, 2023. Mac and Linux now reach version 110.0.5481.177, while for Windows, versions 110.0.5481.177/.178 are ready. It is a security update that fixes a critical vulnerability. Windows Server 2022: VMware ESXi 7.0 U3k Patch for Secure Boot Issue (Update KB5022842, Feb. 2023)

Windows[German]VMware released VMware ESXi 7.0 U3k on Feb. 21, 2023, to address the Secure Boot issue of VMs. The background was that with the Feb. 14, 2023 patchday, an installed security update (KB5022842) for Windows Server 2022 prevented virtual machines under certain ESXi versions from Secure Boot. The workaround was to disable Secure Boot. A fix is now available for VMware ESXi 7.x – other scenarios with this flaw continue to wait for a patch and must continue to operate without Secure Boot.

Licensing hooks: MS SQL Server license increased by factor 3, and user-based Oracle Java SE licenses

[German]Today a nice article about how Microsoft and Oracle are pulling customers you around the arena by a nose ring. Blame the licensing thing. Depending on your view, it's either love or hate. Some will happily donate their money for licenses – you are doing a good work (there is no alternative), others curse like sparrows, but swallow it anyway. One reader informed me that he is "happy" to pay triple the price for renewing an MS SQL Server license. And Oracle users are rejoicing because new Java SE licenses are now charged by the user. This moved me to share this joy with you and write a small article about it.
