Stop - Pixabay[German]I have often reported about firmware updates for printers here in the blog. One point are security updates that close vulnerabilities in printers. The other point are firmware updates that reduce the functionality of a printer – for example to the use of consumables (ink, toner) of the printer manufacturer. Recently, I was contacted by a blog reader who reported a firmware update that rendered a whole series of printers unusable. It's a bit late already, but I'm posting the case here on the blog as a warning.

Secure domain controller against attacks

WordPress Version 6.1.1 released

The developers have released WordPress version 6.1.1 on November 15, 2022. It is a maintenance update that is supposed to fix 28 bugs in the core and 18 bugs in the block editor. Details can be found in the release notes.

Windows Server 2019 ignores GPO defaults for install/restart since Nov. 2022

Windows[German]Today another observation from an administrator regarding update management via WSUS. On a Windows Server 2019, the defaults are set via GPO so that updates are automatically installed every Monday/Thursday at 1am and the server should be restarted afterwards. But with the November 2022 updates this did not work, the installation including reboot happened on Friday from 6pm, the day the administrator had approved the updates on WSUS.

Firefox 107.0 and 102.5.0 esr released

Mozilla[German]Mozilla's developers have released the versions 107.0.0 and 102.5.0 ESR of the Firefox browser on November 15, 2022. The ESR versions are maintenance updates that are supposed to fix bugs. Firefox 107 is a new development branch. In both updates, vulnerabilities are fixed. Thanks to the reader for the tip.

Amazon's value drops by 1,000 billion; 10,000 employees will be laid off this week

Amazon[German]US online seller Amazon is currently experiencing stormy times. The company has suffered a dramatic loss of value in its share price, which reaches 1,000 billion US dollars. It has now been rumored that Amazon is likely to make major layoffs this week. Around 10,000 employees will probably have to leave.

Windows Server 2012 R2: Sophos user authentication using heartbeat disabled on RDS servers

Sophos has distributed an update that silently overrides the feature on Windows Server 2012 R2.
