Microsoft confirms: Windows fails to detect dangerous drivers – block lists not updated

Windows[German]Windows 10/11 and its server pendants should block known, malicious drivers when they are loaded, so that they cannot cause any damage, as Microsoft has claimed for years. Now, Microsoft has secretly admitted that they made a mistake there. Because the updates that are responsible for defining a  driver blocking list in Windows were probably never reliably published or updated. However, administrators can update the block lists manually.

LockSmith: Search for AD Certificate Services misconfigurations via PowerShell script

There is a small PowerShell script to identify and fix common misconfigurations in Active Directory Certificate Services. I became aware of the tool via this tweet. he tool is offered under the name LockSmith under MIT license on Github.

Has Microsoft shown a GUI prototype of the next Windows (accidentally) at Ignite?

Windows[German]At Microsoft's Ignite conference, which took place last week, there were numerous presentations about new Microsoft products. It seems that a GUI of a Windows desktop appeared, which has nothing to do with current Windows 10/Windows 11 desktops. So there is speculation that it is an early developer variant of the next Windows generation (Windows 12 or whatever it will be called).

Edge 106.0.1370.47 – does the browser causes hard disk accesses?

Edge[German]Microsoft has updated the Edge browser in the stable channel to version 106.0.1370.47 as of October 14, 2022. Is a security update, which should iron out the vulnerabilities fixed in Chrome. However, there are reports that Edge constantly writes to the system drives. In my opinion, this behavior is not really new.

BlackByte ransomware disables security solutions via Windows drivers

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]The developers of the BlackByte ransomware exploit a vulnerability in a legitimate Windows driver (from Micro-Star's MSI AfterBurner 4.6.2.15658) to bypass security solutions. Security researchers from Sophos recently pointed this out in a report. This technique is known as BYOVD (Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver) attack and is nothing new. However, I would like to raise the issue here as a renewed warning.

Outlook 365 Outbox: Online mode no longer possible for shared mailboxes

Lansweeper Windows 11 Readyness-Test: Almost 50% of systems still incompatible in October 2022

Windows[German]Vendor Lansweeper has presented an analysis of the market one year after the release of Windows 11. This analysis examined whether the existing hardware equipment of the devices is compatible with Windows 11. The result doesn't really surprise me, but almost half of the existing hardware in the field is not compatible with Windows 11 because CPU, RAM or TPM and Secure Boot do not meet Microsoft's specifications.

Microsoft kills Office; it's branded Microsoft 365 in the future

Outlook bugs: Fix for contacts overlay; workaround for password problem

[German]Brief addendum from this week for Outlook users or administrators. Microsoft seems to have fixed the bug that the Outlook Contacts view covers "People" windows as of October 11, 2022. Also, I have a workaround for the problem with Outlook suddenly requesting a password to sync with the email server. Both issues had been addressed in posts here on the blog.
