Windows bugs: Update and shutdown; Lock screen; Start menu and search

Windows[German]I'm going to compile a list of bugs and inconsistencies related to Windows 10/11 that I've recently come across in a single post. The "Update and shut down" function in the Start menu seems to be broken in Windows 11, but Microsoft is working on it. The lock screen may behave strangely in Windows 11, and an administrator reports problems with the Start menu and search in RDS on Windows Server 2022.

Amazon Web Service outage brought half of the Internet down

Stop - Pixabay[German]On October 20, 2025, an outage of Amazon Web Service servers in Virginia (USA) killed nearly half of the web, due to a single point of failure. I got informed by a German reader at 9:30 a.m. CET about an issue. It's now clear, that Atlassian services, Amazon Web Services, Autodesk, Signal, and many more depending services are also affected. October 2025 update causes smart card issues

Windows[German]Addendum from last week, where security updates for Windows Clients and Windows Server were rolled out on October 14, 2025. Microsoft has admitted that these security updates cause problems with smart cards. Under certain circumstances, these may no longer be recognized, and administrators must apply a workaround.

Windows 11 24H2: SenseShield Upgrade Stopper removed

Windows[German]Windows systems that had the SenseShield driver sprotect.sys installed could not previously run Windows 11 24H2—they experienced blue screens and crashes. The problem has now been solved, and Microsoft has lifted the upgrade blocker for Windows 11 24H2 that was related to SenseShield technology.

Windows 11 will become (still optional) an "AI PC" that you can talk to

Windows[German]Microsoft had been announcing it as a "big event" for days—now it's clear what they meant. All computers running Windows 11 (probably 24H2 / 25H2) are to be upgraded with AI functions to become AI companions that "users can talk to." At least, that's the fever dream from Redmond, although the whole thing is supposed to be optional (for now).
