Linux Mint: Chromium back in the repository

[German]The head of the Mint project, Clem Lefebvre, announced in the October 2020 news that the Chromium browser (base of Google Chrome) has now been added to the official repositories for both Linux Mint and LMDE (package name in Linux Mint and LMDE is "chromium"). To ensure timely updates, the process of detecting, packaging and assembling new versions of Chrome has been automated (for this purpose a new build server has been procured to go from 6 hours to 1 hour build time).  (via)

AI to solve partial differential equations

[German]Well, it's been 41 years since I was working the last time with partial differential equations – never used again since my university time – and the majority of my blog readers won't work in this field. But it is already an exciting topic. Most of the time, super-computers are used on something like this to find solutions. Researchers at Caltech have now used artificial intelligence (AI) for a deep learning method to solve partial differential equations better or faster and have been successful (about 1,000 times faster). The original work can be found here, a review article can be found here. Maybe someone can use it. Otherwise have a good start into this week.

NSA list of the Top 25 Cyber Threats

[German]Cyber criminals are successfully attacking businesses, administration and organizations and successfully exploiting vulnerabilities for these actions. The American intelligence service NSA has published a list of the most frequently used attack vectors, exploits and malware by Chinese hacker groups. It might be interesting to take a look at this list, which I received through Check Point, the provider of cyber security solutions.

WordPress 5.5.2, and 5.5.3 as bux fix released

The developers have released WordPress 5.5.2 as a security and maintenance update on October 29, 2020. In this version 14 bugs are fixed, which are described in the release notes. The update fixes a critical vulnerability that allows a remote attacker to take over a page via a denial of service attack (see also). So you should update as soon as possible – here the blogs were updated immediately after release. Addenum: On October 30, 2020 WordPress 5.5.3 has been released as a bug fix update.
