Adobe has released an optional update to version 23.008.20458 for Adobe Acrobat (Reader) DC on January 4, 2024. It is a planned update for macOS and Windows, which is intended to fix various bugs. According to the release notes, it is a hotfix patch for Acrobat and Acrobat Reader that fixes some important bugs (via).

Windows Server 2022: Print jobs to print server (LPD service) have been broken since December 2023

Windows[German]I'll pick up on a topic that I came across in the comments here on the blog – but I don't know if it's just an isolated incident. Are there administrators who have noticed that since December 2023 print jobs that are transmitted via SMB, for example, are no longer processed? Or the clients suddenly no longer get a connection to the print server (LPD service) and an error 0x00000709 is reported when creating new connections.

Google Chrome 120.0.6099.199/200

Chrome[German]Google has released updates of the Google Chrome browser in the Stable Channel for Mac, Linux and Windows to version 120.0.6099.199/200 on January 3, 2023. Version 120.0.6099.199 for Mac and 120.0.6099.200 for Windows were released in the Extended Stable Channel. The Android app of the Chrome browser has also been updated. Microsoft's new Windows boss wants to improve Windows 11 Start; Copilot button for new PCs

Windows[German]The new head of the Windows product group at Microsoft, Mikhail Parakhin, wanted to know from Windows 11 users at the end of the year what could be changed or improved in the user interface of the operating system. One of the suggestions was that users should be able to scroll through the list of apps under Start. Parakhin has now signaled that they want to work on this "feature". Could come with the feature dropout (Moments 5) update expected in February 2024. Oh yes, new Windows PCs are to get a "Copilot" button on the keyboard.

Steam has endet support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024

Windows[German]The time has come: The Steam platform has discontinued support for Windows 7, Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 as of January 1, 2024. This means that Steam client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive )(security) updates with immediate effect. Happy New Year 2024

That's what I wish all of my blog readers. 2024 will bring some changes for me – after blogging here since 2012 (and writing as a freelance author for 30 years) – it's time for me "to let it slowly fading out and enjoy my retirement, before it's too late". I will address it in a separate blog post soon.

The 3CX MySQL security vulnerability and how the provider deals with critical words

Stop - Pixabay[German]Recently, there was a warning to customers of the telephone system provider 3CX who have integrated an SQL database into the software for CRM purposes. I reported on the issue in the blog post 3CX warning: Disable SQL database integrations (Dec. 15, 2023). Users of the 3CX software complained about the slow processing of the early reported security vulnerability. One user subsequently contacted me by email because the response to criticism in the provider's forum was very specific: The posts were deleted. And the reader's account was also blocked – but the whole thing can be recapitulated, which I have done below.

Undocumented Google OAuth function misused by malware for account hijacking

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]There is an undocumented feature in Google's OAuth implementation that is being abused by several malware strains. These use an exploit that allows them to recover expired cookies. This allows them to then log in to online accounts, steal information or take over the account. The login even works if an online account has been reset. It is currently unclear whether Google has fixed the problem in the browser.
