Google Chrome 117.0.5938.149/.150 closes vulnerability

ChromeGoogle has released updates to the Google Chrome browser 117 in the stable channel for Mac, Linux and Windows on October 3, 2023. The announcement can be found on the Google blog. The stable channel has been updated to version 117.0.5938.149 for macOS and Linux. For Windows, the update updates the browser to version 117.0.5938.149/.150. According to the change log, a Type Confusion vulnerability (CVE-2023-5346) with severity level High in V8 only has been fixed. The Android Chrome app was also updated to version 117.0.5938.153 and closes the vulnerability. (via)

Lancom (R&S) Firewalls (UF-xxx) no longer get signature updates from Oct. 1st till 4th 2023

Stop - Pixabay[German]German blog reader Uwe Kernchen has just pointed out to me an issues that users and administrators of Lancom firewalls (also offered by Rhode & Schwarz) have hade. Since October 1, 2023, the UF-xxx firewalls no longer receive signature updates. Presumably, this is due to Lancom's plan to change the key for the Avira antivirus engine, which may have gone wrong. The issue has been fixed on Oct. 4, 2023.

Warning about vulnerabilities in Exim Mail Transfer Agent (MTA)

There are several critical vulnerabilities in the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) and open source mail server. CERT-Bund warns about these vulnerabilities, because attackers could execute arbitrary code via the SMTP service. In the meantime, the developers have provided security updates. Anyone using the Exim MTA as a mail server should urgently patch it immediately.

Microsoft fixes "open window" bug on Outlook startup

[German]Microsoft Outlook users have been plagued by an annoying bug since the end of June 2023. The program asked at every startup whether windows open in the previous session should be opened again (even if there were no such windows). The options to disable the prompt were missing in the settings. Now Microsoft claims to have fixed this bug.

Support for Windows Server 2012 / R2 and Windows 11 21H2 ends on October 10, 2023

Windows[German]A small reminder for administrators of Windows Server 2012 / R2 systems: These will receive security updates for the last time on October 10, 2023 and will then regularly fall out of the 10-year support. However, there is the possibility to continue to receive security updates via paid ESU support for another three years. And users of Windows 11 21H2 should also think about switching to Windows 11 22H2, since the former version will also reach the end of life on October 10, 2023.

Windows 10/11: Edge fills up the Temp folder with Edge_BITS_xxx files

Windows[German]Microsoft has released preview updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on September 26, 2023. Edge also received updates. A reader has noticed that in his Windows "recently" the Temp folder is written full with folders and files that have the name Edge_BITS_xxx-xxx. I then checked Windows 11 22H2 in a virtual machine, there are the files as well.
