Windows security updates against Intel silicon vulnerabilities (March 2, 2023)

Windows[German]Microsoft has released special updates for Windows versions still in support on March 2, 2023. These are supposed to fix vulnerabilities (Speculative Execution Control and side-channel attacks) in Intel's CPUs. These vulnerabilities in Intel processors have been known since last summer. The special updates are also only available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows: Unified Update Platform will get active end of March 2023, prepare WSUS

Windows[English]Starting March 28, 2023, Microsoft will arm its Unified Update Platform (UUP) after a lengthy preview period for Windows 11 version 22H2. This is intended to bring the power of Windows Update and Windows Update for Business to on-premises Windows clients. Windows 10/11: Using Windows Update for Business and WSUS together

Microsoft has published an article as of February 28, 2023 with notes on what has changed when scanning for updates on clients running Windows 10 and Windows 11 and how the machines scan for new patches using either Windows Update for Business (WUfB) and WSUS. DualScan is dead according to this and administrators need to watch what group policies are set.

New hints about Windows 12 from Intel

Windows[German]Microsoft has just released its Moments 2 update for Windows 11 22H2 (Windows 11 22H2: Moments 2 update KB5022913 brings many new features) – which was more or less a disguised advertisement for Edge and Bing with ChatGPT beta functionalities. Behind the scenes, however, they are working on a successor, which will probably come to the people in the second half of 2024 as Windows 12. After I reported hints about Windows 12 before, there is now an (unintentional) hint from Intel.

Microsoft has released version 1.2.4065 of the Windows Desktop Client (MSRDC) for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) to Insiders as of February 28, 2023. The production version is 1.2.3918, dated February 7, 2023, which is the last version of the Remote Desktop Client with support for Windows 7.

BlackLotus UEFI bootkit bypasses Secure Boot in Windows 11

Windows[German]Security researchers from ESET have discovered a malware in the wild that hijacks the UEFI and has been christened BlackLotus. BlackLotus is believed to be the first UEFI bootkit malware in the wild that can bypass Secure Boot on Windows 11. Malware can then also disable Defender or Bitlocker and HVCI in Windows. So much for the highly praised security with UEFI, Secure Boot & Co. under Windows 10/11.

Windows 11 22H2: Moments 2 update KB5022913 causes startup problems with third-party GUI tools

Windows[German]Zum 28. Februar 2023 hat Microsoft das Moments 2-Update KB5022913 als Preview für Windows 11 22H2 veröffentlicht. Dieses bringt zwar zahlreiche Neuerungen und soll zum März 2023 Patchday breit ausgerollt werden, kollidiert aber mit einem GUI-Tools von Drittanbietern. Wer den ExplorerPatcher oder StartAllBack installiert hat, muss diese Tools deinstallieren. Andernfalls besteht Gefahr, dass das System nicht mehr startet.

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Essentials): SSU KB5022922 fixes installation error 0x800F0922 on Feb. 2023 update

Windows[English]Administrators of Windows Server 2012 R2 (Essentials) had the unpleasant experience that the security updates from February 14, 2023 could not be installed, but were aborted with the installation error 0x800F0922. As of February 28, 2023, Microsoft has now released a new Servicing Stack Update (SSU) to fix this installation error.

Windows 11 22H2: Moments 2 update KB5022913 brings many new features

Windows[German]Microsoft has released the update for Windows 11 called Moments 2 22H2. This update brings several innovations to the platform. This ranges from the new AI-powered Bing, to improved touch operation, to Phone Link for iOS. There are also full-screen widgets and quick access to the generally available Windows 365 app. Windows 11 also includes new AI features in the Start menu (an integration with Bing search in the taskbar) and ongoing updates to make the OS more accessible and sustainable.
