Windows[German]On October 12, 2021 (second Tuesday of the month, Patchday at Microsoft), Microsoft also released the first cumulative update for Windows 11, which was released on October 5, 2021. The update is supposed to fix various compatibility issues. Here are some details about this update.

A list of updates can be found on this Microsoft website (but the German language pages are not up to date yet). I have pulled out the details below.

Update KB5006674 for Windows 11

Cumulative Update KB5006674 raises the OS build for Windows 11 to 22000.258 and includes quality improvements as well as security patches, but no new OS features. Regarding the security fixes, it just says in general terms: updates security for your Windows operating system. The main changes that this update makes include:

Addresses known compatibility issues between some Intel "Killer" and "SmartByte" networking software and Windows 11 (original release). Devices with the affected software might drop User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets under certain conditions. This creates performance and other issues for protocols based on UDP. For example, some websites might load slower than others on the affected devices, which might cause videos to stream slower in certain resolutions. VPN solutions based on UDP might also be slower.

So, the bugs addressed in the blog post Windows 11: Known issues (October 5, 2021) are partially fixed. Microsoft is not aware of any issues related to this cumulative security update.

Addendum: However, owners of AMD Ryzen processors face the problem that the Level 3 cache functions even worse after the update than before. The performance, especially in games, drops further. German site heise works addressed the issue in this article.

Microsoft notes that this update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack (is responsible for Microsoft updates). This update is automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update, but is also available from the Microsoft Update Catalog and via WSUS and WUfB. More details can be found in the KB article here.
