Fails at Microsofts Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool (KB5034510; HP Smart app fixer)

Windows[German]Unfortunately, I have to bring up another topic that focuses on Microsoft's "competence" in terms of writing secure software. It's about Microsoft's Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool, which is provided under KB5034510. It is intended to resolve issues with printer icons and the installed HP Smart app caused by updates. However, the tool does not work under RDS 2016, but throws an access error. The developers failed in several places when creating the tool.

Google Chrome now with Background Safety Check

[German]Another short piece of information from this week that affects users of the Google Chrome browser. Google has announced that a new "Safety Check" function is being rolled out in Chrome. This security function runs automatically in the background on desktop systems. Users will be warned if security threats such as compromised passwords stored in the browser or malicious extensions are detected.

EU: Google Chrome will display a search engine choice for desktops from 2024

[German]Google is probably reacting to the legal situation within the European Union. There is the Digital Service Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA). These require gatekeepers within the European Union to allow users to choose which services they use. Google will therefore display a search engine selection on the desktop in its Chrome browser in 2024.

BlueBrixx victim of a Cyber attack (Dec. 21, 2023)

On December 21, 2023, the company BB Services GmbH informed its customers that it had been the victim of a cyberattack. The company is known under the name BlueBrixx as a manufacturer and retailer of brick sets (similar to Lego® bricks). Customer data can be affected, from names and ordered items to passwords. Only payment information should not be affected, as this is held by an external service provider.

Microsoft declares Windows "Mixed Reality" – and also Defender Application Guard for Edge as deprecated

Windows[German]The list of discontinued Windows features that will be removed in future is getting longer and longer every day. After Cortana and the WebDAV client were already discontinued in November 2023, Microsoft also declared the speech recognition introduced in Windows Vista as "deprecated" at the beginning of December 2023. This was followed by the legacy console mode and now the "Mixed Reality" mode in Windows under Windows as been declared as deprecated. Same is also happening in Edge, where the Defender Application Guard has been declared deprecated.

Chrome[German]Google has released updates of the Google Chrome browser in the Stable Channel for Mac, Linux and Windows to version 120.0.6099.129/130 on December 20, 2023. Version 120.0.6099.129/130 for Mac and Windows was released in the Extended Stable Channel. The Android app of the Chrome browser has also been updated. The updates contain security fixes.
